Two Public Exhibits At Ripon College

14 March 2020 News

RIPON — Two public exhibits facilitated by Ripon College museum studies students currently are running at Ripon College. Both are free and open to the public.

“Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II,” a poster exhibit, is on view through April 3 in the Ripon College Museum in West Hall. Museum hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History makes poster versions of some of their exhibits available for display at venues such as colleges, libraries, community centers and high schools.

The focus is on a difficult period in U.S. history. It traces the story of Japanese national and Japanese American incarceration during World War II and the people who survived it. It centers on eight core questions that encourage viewers to engage in a dialog about how this happened and whether it could happen again.

The themes as relevant today as they were 75 years ago: identity, immigration, prejudice, civil rights, courage and what it means to be an American.

“Juxtapositions,” an exhibit of paired objects curated by the students, is on view through Sept. 4 in the Resource Center of C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts. The Resource Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the spring semester.

The students worked in groups to select objects, lay out the display, wrote and edited interpretive labels and learned techniques for handling objects.

The students are in the Museums, Artifacts and Cultural Heritage class, part of the College’s Museum Studies program. Travis Nygard, associate professor of art and director of the Caestecker Gallery, is the instructor.

The students learned about conventions of displaying two-dimensional material while putting it on view, including how to do an exhibit layout and how to hang material at standard heights.

Students involved with the class are: Lili Alderson ’23, Ripon Wisconsin; Hannah Boyum ’20 of Peterson, Minnesota; Halina Decker ’21 of St. Paul, Minnesota; Dasia Davis ’21 of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; Lucinda Izzo ’20 of Wautoma, Wisconsin; Kayley Giliberto ’20 of Wautoma, Wisconsin; Miles Kremsreiter ’22 of Coleman, Wisconsin; Zaeem Kitsos ’20 of Iverness, Illinois; Jessica Luhman ’20 of Barneveld, Wisconsin; Juliettte Lingle ’22 of Carbondale, Illinois; Jamie Malach ’20 of Batavia, Illinois; Hailey Makuski ’23 of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; Erik Osmonson ’20 of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; Terrina Phillips ’20 of Lathrop, California; Danielle Ratliff ’21 of Manchester, Wisconsin; Caroline Reid ’21 of Bloomington, Minnesota; Aftyn Reinwand ’23 of Chili, Wisconsin; Race Rohde ’20 of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Adam Scholze ’22 of La Crosse, Wisconsin; Kira Simonis ’20 of Antigo, Wisconsin; Mackenzie Swart ’20 of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Deshawn Thomas ’20 of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; MacKenzie Warner ’20 of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Shay Weingart ’21 of Kimberly, Wisconsin; and Bailey Zanck ’22 of New Berlin, Wisconsin.
