Tip Leads Deputies To Home Where Multiple Small Animals Were Being Kept
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department got an anonymous tip Tuesday morning about a residence in Eden where a number of cats and dogs were being kept possibly endangering the health of a small child. As deputies approached outside the home on Manor Hill Drive there was a strong smell of urine and ammonia. At least 20 cats were being kept in a small room and there were also dogs in the home. He admitted wanting to get rid of the cats, but not having the means to do it.
Scam Warning
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers pretend to be with the “FBI” and the Sheriff’s Office. Someone posing as an FBI agent calls telling you that you are the subject of an embezzlement investigation and your assets are frozen. They ask for personal information and bank information. To legitimize the scam they tell you that you will receive a follow up call from the Sheriff’s Department to confirm the investigation. That caller will call with a number that spoofs the actual phone number for the Sheriff’s Office. If the Sheriff’s Office did call you the ID would read private or restricted.

Working Through Bureaucracy
State Representative Joan Ballweg says one of the important roles of her job is to help state residents wade through the bureaucracy. The state lawmaker from Markesan says they do a lot of outreach, but are also contacted by folks who just don’t know the appropriate agency or channel to work through. “Half of what you do as a legislator is making that connection for the constituents. There are many cases where someone calls that just can’t seem to get through to an agency or doesn’t understand what is going on and we’ve made many calls and helped folks.” Ballweg says they usually can help get a situation worked out or explain to someone what they need to get done with the legislature.
Ripon Area United Way Close To Fundraising Goal
The Ripon Area United Way is within a few thousand dollars of reaching its $85,000 fundraising goal. United Way Board of Directors President Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says of Tuesday they were at $82,437 or roughly $2,500 away from their goal, which he believes they can attain by the end of the month. He says there is a perception that they only benefit those who are in need, but it is much more than that. “It does great things for out preschools, for our daycare center, for the reading program for young children, Diverse Options, and then there is people that really depend on it and programs that depend on it for people that are in distress.” In fact the local campaign helps out 17 different agencies that provide programs in the community. To make a contribution to the United Way campaign send them to P.O. Box 71 in Ripon, 54971 or go to their Facebook page or website.

Public Works Director Jeff Daane says a citizen suggested the city should change signage at its parks clarifying that service animals are an exception to the no dogs allowed policy. The city attorney recommended updating the ordinance if the signs were going to be altered. State law identifies service animals as either dogs or miniature horses.
