The Miami Heat stand alone, the first team to beat the Milwaukee Bucks twice this season. Jae Crowder and Jimmy Butler each scored 18 points, Goran Dragic added 15 and the Heat beat the Bucks 105-89 on Wednesday night — moving to 2-0 against the NBA’s best team. Bam Adebayo had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat, who improved to 39-22 and matched their win total from last season with 19 games remaining. Kendrick Nunn had 13 points and Kelly Olynyk added 11 for Miami. It was a season-low in points for the Bucks, set for the second straight day after Milwaukee managed only 93 in a win Sunday at Charlotte. The difference was from the 3-point line: Miami was 18 for 37, Milwaukee was 7 for 34. Brook Lopez led the Bucks (52-9) with 21 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo matched a season-low with 13 points on 6 for 18 shooting, and grabbed 15 rebounds. George Hill finished with 12 points in 24 minutes. Khris Middleton also scored 12 and Donte DiVincenzo scored 11 for the Bucks. The Bucks host Indiana on Wednesday.
A string of losses to unranked opponents led to upheaval in the AP Top 25 this week. Kansas kept winning, strengthening its grip on No. 1. The Jayhawks were the unanimous choice for the top spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday, receiving all 64 votes from the media panel. Gonzaga was No. 2, with Dayton, Baylor and San Diego State rounding out the top five. The Aztecs, No. 9 Maryland and No. 18 Iowa were the only other teams to hold their place after a week in which nine Top 25 teams lost to unranked opponents. No. 24 Wisconsin is ranked for the first time this season after victories against No. 25 Michigan and Minnesota.
The Brewers had the day off Monday but are back in action today in Arizona playing the Padres in Peoria. First pitch is at 2:10. Milwaukee is 6-2 in Cactus League action.
The Wisconsin Herd becomes first G League team to clinch a playoff spot this season with a 115-108 Saturday night over the Westchester Knicks. Through 40 games, the Herd have comprised a 31-9 record, which is currently the best mark in the league. With last night’s victory, Wisconsin tied the 2009-10 Iowa Energy and 2016-17 Raptors 905 for the second-most wins through the first 40 games of a G League season. The NBA G League playoffs features four rounds and is comprised of 12 teams – six in each conference. The six division winners will automatically qualify for the postseason, and the additional six playoff berths will be filled by three wild card teams in each conference. The six wild card teams will own the best overall regular season records, other than the division winners. The top two seeds in each conference will earn a first-round bye and will advance to the quarterfinals. Playoffs will begin with three single elimination rounds before culminating in a best-of-three NBA G League Finals. Wisconsin Herd guard Frank Mason III has been named the NBA G League Player of the Month for February. While leading the Herd to a league-best eight wins, Mason averaged 29.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 29.4 minutes of action. Wisconsin Herd becomes first team in G League history to win Player of the Month honors in three consecutive months. Rayjon Tucker and Jaylen Adams received the award in December and January.
The ice fishing season is drawing to an end. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says all permanent ice shanties need to be removed from ice on waters north of Highway 64 by the end of the day on Sunday, March 15. Due to warming temperatures, officials say anglers should not wait until the deadline to remove their ice shanties. The deadline helps eliminate spring shoreline litter and boating dangers. After the deadline, anglers can continue to use portable ice fishing shelters if they feel the ice is safe. If you see anglers not taking responsibility for their shanties, you can call or text the DNR Violation Hotline at texting 1-800-TIP-WDNR or 1-800-847-9367.
