American House Remediation Versus Demolition
Ripon city staff is checking into whether lead and asbestos testing have already been done on the former American House before authorizing $3,500 in tests. The Common Council last week discussed demolition of the building, which would cost $114,800 according to a firm estimate compared to $132,135 to remediate the mold in it. Mayor Gary Will told the Council they would still have to pay a couple hundred thousand dollars to have the roof fixed if they remediate the mold and there is no guarantee there will be interest in it after that. The city generated no interest in the property when it asked for requests for proposals last year. Alderperson John Splitt is still reaching out to a contractor about the building.

Making The Most Of It
A 9-year-old Berlin boy dying of cancer is making the most of his time left. A party was held for Miguel Duran at the Redgranite Lions Club over the weekend. Organizer Donna Weiss, a friend of the family, says the past few months Miguel has received a letterman’s jacket for wrestling, participated in a trucker’s convoy, just for him, the party last Saturday, and would have visited the home of Mickey Mouse if not for a family illness. “He was supposed to go to Disney (through) Make-A-Wish last week unfortunately the flu bug took ahold of him and some of the family members so he was unable to go.” Weiss says they would still like to arrange a trip to a water park and the Packers’ Hall of Family in Green Bay since Miguel is a huge Packers’ fan. She says maybe they could even arrange a meeting with some of the players.
Election Reminders
If you plan to vote during tomorrow’s primary election you may need a few items. Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg fills us in. “You do need a picture ID that is still in effect and probably will be forever. Make sure you’re registered to vote. If you’re not registered to vote please provide proof of residency, which can be your driver’s license if it is updated.” If you don’t have a driver’s license for proof of residency you can use a utility bill if it has your current address on it. For most voters the only thing that will be on Tuesday’s ballot will be the Supreme Court race, which will narrow the field of candidates from three to two for April’s Presidential Preference Primary.
Planning For Floods
Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken is urging residents to develop a plan on how to respond during a flood event. The plan should include how to communicate with family and friends as well as where you will go if you have to evacuate. She says a friend or relative could act as that communications hub or for a place to stay. “It is always a good idea to have somebody who is out of the area that can be your central location for communication. The other thing to communicate with your family and friends is to find out if you can stay with them if you have to evacuate.” If you do not plan on evacuating, ensure you have supplies to sustain everyone in your home for several days. You also should check into getting a generator in case the power goes out if you have medical or other equipment that needs a power source to run. Hicken notes the county experienced several flooding events last year and there is the potential for more this year.

Calumet County Sheriff’s officials recently announced they have raised over $101,000 to reach a fundraising goal for their second K-9 unit. A check for $10,000 was recently presented to the Sheriff’s Department by the Robert and Patricia Endries Family Foundation. They had already given $15,000 to the effort. Sheriff Mark Wiegert says he is grateful to all the individuals and organizations that gave to the cause. The second dog and its handler will be on the road by this fall. The department’s first K-9 Amer joined the office about four years ago and has been deployed more than 380 times with over 200 arrests.
