Major League Baseball went ahead with its planned rules changes for this season, including the requirement a pitcher must face at least three batters or end the half-inning, unless he is hurt. The changes were agreed to by MLB and the players’ association last March 8. The three-batter minimum will start in spring training games on March 12. The active roster limit will increase by one to 26 from opening day through Aug. 31, will drop from 40 to 28 through the end of the regular season and return to 26 for the postseason.
The Boston Red Sox promoted bench coach Ron Roenicke to manager, hiring him to replace Alex Cora on the day the team’s pitchers and catchers reported for the start of spring training. The move is an indication that Roenicke will escape punishment in baseball’s sign-stealing investigation. Cora was let go for his role in the Houston Astros’ cheating, but the team has maintained that there was no similar scheme in Boston when the Red Sox won it all in 2018.
The east shore of Lake Winnebago continues to be the busiest spot during a slow first half of the sturgeon spearing season. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 38 sturgeon were speared Wednesday. Of those, 24 were from Lake Winnebago and 14 from upriver lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts.
The busiest registration spot on Lake Winnebago was at Calumet Harbor, where 13 sturgeon were registered. On the upriver lakes, Critter’s in Winneconne — one of two stations open — had seven come through. Two fish weighed in at more than 100 pounds. Diana Sanders’ 111.5-pound, 72.8-inch sturgeon was the biggest on the upriver lakes. Scott Schafer nabbed a 102.5-pound, 72.8-inch sturgeon on Lake Winnebago.
T.J. Warren scored 35 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 17 points and tied a career high with 13 assists, helping the Indiana Pacers hold on for a 118-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.The victory sent Indiana into the All-Star break with some momentum after beating the league’s best team to end a six-game losing streak. The Pacers also had lost five straight home games. Donte DiVincenzo led the Bucks with 19 points and Khris Middleton added 17 as reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo missed his second straight game following the birth of his first child. Milwaukee’s five-game winning streak also ended. The bucks return from the All-Star break Feb. 20 at Detroit.
Jermiah Robinson-Earl had 17 points and 11 rebounds and No. 15 Villanova held on for a 72-71 victory over No. 18 Marquette to snap a three-game losing streak. Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels added 14 points apiece for Villanova. The Wildcats had surrendered an average of 75 points during its skid in defeats to Creighton, Butler and Seton Hall. Villanova pulled into a second-place tie with Creighton in the Big East and avoided losing four in a row for the first time since Feb. 15-25, 2012. Markus Howard scored 24 points for Marquette.
Ripon College 83, Cornell College 62-Trent Jones led the Red Hawks with 27 points.
