Brevin Pritzl scored 19 points Sunday leading the Badgers’ to a 70-57 win over Ohio State. Pritzl hit 5 of 6 from 3-point territory, while Trevor Anderson added eight points. They led a stellar effort by Wisconsin’s bench, which outscored Ohio State’s reserves 30-16. Wisconsin (14-10, 7-6 Big Ten Conference) responded to another tough week off the court with another home win in the rough-and-tumble league to bolster its NCAA Tournament resume. Strength and conditioning coach Erik Helland resigned Thursday after being placed on leave for allegedly using a racial epithet in front of Badgers players as he recounted a story from his days in the NBA. The school said it had no evidence Helland had directed racially insensitive language toward any player. Andre Wesson had 11 points to lead Ohio State (15-8, 5-7), which committed nine of its 14 turnovers in the first half and had trouble getting good shots in the paint.
Six-foot-9 center Kaleb Wesson, the team’s leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, spent much of the final 7 minutes of the first half on the bench with foul trouble. He finished with eight points on 2-of-11 shooting. D’Mitrik Trice, who scored eight, sandwiched two 3s around a Pritzl trey in a span of 1:08 late in the first half to give Wisconsin a 36-20 lead. The Badgers get a five-day break before visiting Nebraska on Saturday.
No. 19 Butler contained Markus Howard, the nation’s leading scorer, but Marquette’s supporting cast answered the challenge. Howard, who entered averaging 27.9 points, scored 17 and Brendan Bailey and Koby McEwen added 16 apiece to lead Marquette to a 76-57 victory over Butler on Sunday. Marquette (17-6, 7-4 Big East) put the game away when McEwen hit back-to-back 3 pointers and Bailey followed with another to give the Golden Eagles a 62-45 lead with 6:09 remaining. The victory avenged an 89-85 overtime loss at Butler on Jan. 24, Marquette’s only loss in its last seven games.Kamar Baldwin had 23 points and Bryce Nze added 14 for Butler (18-6, 6-5), which has stumbled after a 15-1 start. Marquette went to the free-throw line 28 times, making 21, compared with 7 of 8 for Butler. The Golden Eagles also had 11 3-pointers, including four each by Bailey and McEwen, while the Bulldogs were just 4 of 20 from beyond the arc. Marquette visits Villanova on Wednesday.
A combined 41 turnovers had Green Bay on the losing end of the 71-58 scoreline at UIC on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix (12-14, 7-6 HL) was seeking its third-straight win and its fifth-straight over the Flames (12-14, 7-6 HL), but too many turnovers and cold shooting from 3 denied them the opportunity. JayQuan McCloud led the Phoenix with 15 points, with 10 of those coming at the free throw line. Trevian Bell did his best to mount a comeback, scoring 11 points off the bench on 5-for-8 shooting. GB forced a season-high 23 turnovers from UIC, but finished just 4-for-18 from 3-point range and had 18 turnovers of its own. UIC shot 50 percent in the game. Green Bay will now turn its focus to in-state rival Milwaukee, which it will visit Saturday. The Phoenix will look to avenge its earlier season loss to the Panthers, with the game tipping at 6 p.m. at the UWM Panther Arena.
On Saturday, Monmouth College won on the road, defeating Ripon College 66-63.
UW-Oshkosh won at U-W Lacrosse 79-74,
On the women’s side, Ripon College won at Lawrence University Saturday, 65-54.
The U-W- Oshkosh women beat U-W Lacrosse Saturday, 85-76.
Khris Middleton hit a 3-pointer less than 20 seconds into the game, and the team with the league’s best record never trailed Saturday night in a 112-95 victory over the Orlando Magic. It’s the 13th time the Bucks have led from wire to wire this season. Yiannis Antetokounmpo nearly had a triple double with 19 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists while also falling short of becoming the first player in league history with at least 30 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists in six consecutive games. Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player with a stretch of five straight games with 30, 15 and 5, accomplishing it from Dec. 10-17, 1965, with the Philadelphia Warriors.
Lopez led the Bucks with 23 points, including 5 for 5 on 3-point attempts. Middleton had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Bledsoe finished with 18 points. Nikola Vucevic led the Magic with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Terrence Ross had 20 points, Markelle Fultz scored 15 and Evan Fournier added 14 for Orlando, which continues to hold the eighth playoff position in the Eastern Conference despite losing eight of its last nine.
With Middleton, Brook Lopez and Eric Bledsoe picking up the slack, it didn’t matter as Milwaukee won for the 13th time in 14 games, improved to 45-7 overall and remained on course to become only the third team to top 70 wins in the regular season. Bucks guard George Hill missed a fifth straight game with a strained left hamstring. Milwaukee returns home to host Sacramento on Monday night.
The Wisconsin Herd won at home Saturday night, defeating the Maine Red Claws 134-118. Six Herd players scored in double figures, including three who tallied 20 points or
more. Wisconsin was led by Jaylen Adams and Frank Mason who scored 26 points apiece. Adams added seven rebounds and seven assists, while Mason shot 10-for-19 from the field. Trevor Lacey collected his first 20-point game and tallied season highs in points (20) and field goals (eight), while tying his season-high with four
three-pointers. Cameron Reynolds notched 17 points and six rebounds, and Leon
Gilmore III added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Yante Maten led the way for the Red Claws as he scored a game-high 34 points and
grabbed 15 rebounds in a reserve role. Jaysean Paige recorded 26 points (10-17 FG),
six rebounds and four assists, while Tremont Waters recorded 16 points and eight
assists. Bryce Brown had 15 points and Tacko Fall scored just four points but had 14 rebounds and four blocks. Wisconsin will hit the road for a single game against College Park on Tuesday.
