Fire Damages Grain Dryer Silo Near Allenton

Fire caused about $200,000 in damage to a grain dryer silo near Allenton Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews were dispatched to Farmers Grain and Feed at 6865 Spruce Court in Washington County’s Town of Addison just after 4 pm. Crews were able to contain the fire to the grain dryer silo bin. The cause is still being determined. No injuries were reported. Officials say the blaze destroyed $90,000 worth of soybeans and it will cost $100,000 to replace the grain dryer.

Lomira Charged For Spitting At Police After Super Bowl Party

Bond was set at $5,000 cash this week for a 44-year-old Lomira man accused of spitting at police officers after a Super Bowl party. Jason Moore was drinking excessively at the party and argued with family members when they returned home Sunday evening. Eventually he had to be arrested and spat at an officer after being placed in a squad car. He’s charged with two felonies and three misdemeanors and returns to Dodge County court for a preliminary hearing next Thursday.

Hugs And Forgiveness

Things got emotional during a sentencing in Fond du Lac County this week for a 35-year-old North Fond du Lac man. Travis Wollersheim was sentenced to 12 months of conditional jail time, 3 years of probation, and 120 hours of community service for running into the back of a vehicle on Interstate 41 and killing 26-year-old David Button and his 8-year-old son Joseph. District Attorney Eric Toney says Wollersheim cried as he asked the family for forgiveness and some of them stood up and hugged him. “One of the family members wanted to hug him and the judge allowed that and then probably six or seven of the family members got up in a line and just hugged him and forgave him as that sat back down so it was a very powerful moment in court.” Toney says although a jury found negligence it wasn’t in the traditional sense like for example someone being distracted by a cell phone or fussing with something in the car and taking their eyes off the road. The Buttons were passengers in a vehicle stopped behind others due to a lane closure for road construction. The accident happened on June 22nd of 2016.

Iowa Caucuses Criticism

The delay in getting Democratic presidential voting results in the Iowa Caucuses this week led to some criticism about whether that state should be doing primary elections the way most states traditionally do. Congressman Glenn Grothman is among those who feel a primary would be better for that state. “I think Iowa is the middle of the Heartland and I think they can be first, but they should do a regular primary like every other state. They shouldn’t allow such influence with the, I’ll say, non-cross section of people who show up at these things.” Grothman also feels it takes people more time to participate in the caucuses so there would be greater participation in regular voting.

Green Lake Golf Cart Ordinance

The Green Lake City Council will consider approving an ordinance Monday night that would allow the use of golf carts on city streets. The ordinance would be similar to one adopted by Princeton in 2018. That ordinance requires golf carts to be registered with the Princeton Police Department and an inspection of the cart. There is also an initial registration fee and an annual fee thereafter. There are also some safety requirements including that the golf cart be equipped with a reflective “slow moving” sign on the rear of the cart. The Green Lake City Council meets Monday night at 6 pm at the Green Lake City Hall.
