Secret Shopping Scam
Markesan Police are warning residents that the “secret shopper” scam is making the rounds again. It involves scammers sending you a check to do some secret shopping. You’re told that the check they send includes $300 to $400 for you for doing the shopping. You’re instructed to also buy gift cards with the money and send them the numbers on the back of the gift cards. But the check they sent is a fake and when it bounces you are out for all of the money including what you spent on the gift cards. Police say you have to be careful because there are legit companies that use secret shopping to test marketing for products.

Census Importance
An official with the U.S. Census Bureau says it is important that the 2020 Census gets an accurate count of the population. Bob Giblin says in addition to finding out how many people are living in the U.S. it is the basis for a state’s number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and allocations of federal funding. “The census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and it also informs how state, local and federal lawmakers will allocate more than $675 billion a year in federal funding.” Giblin says Wisconsin usually has one of the highest rates of participation in the census with about 82 percent of state residents participating in the last census. The U.S. Census count begins on March 12th and needs to wrap up by July 31st.
