Conditions For Sturgeon Spearing May Not Be Great
The sturgeon season on Lake Winnebago is expected to go all 16 days when it kicks off this Saturday. The DNR says water clarity or visibility, which is all important for sturgeon spearing success, is not great. DNR Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says visibility has improved somewhat over the past few weeks to 7 to 10 feet in the water. But ice conditions also could come into play with the past weekend’s warm up not helping. More than 12,000 sturgeon spearing licenses were sold for Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes.
More Sessions Planned To Gather Input For Ripon Schools Referendum
Ripon School District voters who missed last night’s referendum engagement session at the Ripon High School will have three more opportunities this month and next month. The School Board wants the community’s input on an operational referendum that will be on the November 3rd ballot. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says the referendum may be similar to two previous referendums they’ve had over the past 12 years. “There have been two previous operational referendums and so it will be a total of 12 years where we have had these additional dollars and from what I am hearing and just initial thoughts I believe we are probably looking at something similar to what we currently have.” The current operational referendum for an additional $500,000 a year ends next year. Other community engagement sessions are scheduled on February 12th and March 2nd and 30th at the high school from 6 to 7:30 pm.

Giblin says there are still hundreds of jobs in the area for census workers for those who need seasonal employment. “Fond du Lac for example we still need an additional 222 applications for census taker jobs, Marquette County we need about 30, Green Lake County 34, Winnebago 317.” In Dodge County they need 123 census takers, 112 in Washington County, 117 in Sheboygan County, and 13 to 14 in Calumet County. It pays $17 to $24 an hour. Giblin says people can get applications and more information on their website 2020census.gov. The census needs to be completed by July 31st.

Scout’s Story Goes Viral Results In Big Donation
The story of the 7-year-old golden retriever named “Scout” that survived a nearly terminal form or cancer thanks to the help of the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine went viral and resulted in a big donation to the school. Scout’s story was featured in the WeatherTech Super Bowl ad this past Sunday, but it went viral prior to that. As a result Petco last Friday announced a $250,000 donation to the school. WeatherTech Founder and owner David MacNeil, Scout’s owner, was grateful for the care the school provided for Scout and had the ad created to ask for donations to the school.
