28 January 2020 Sports

Luka Garza had 21 points and 18 rebounds and No. 18 Iowa rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat Wisconsin 68-62 on Monday night.

The Hawkeyes (15-5, 6-3 Big Ten) trailed 57-45 with 7:13 to play before going on a 19-2 run. Joe Toussaint’s layup and free throw with 1:20 to go gave Iowa a 60-59 lead, and the Hawkeyes did not trail again.

It was the 12th double-double of the season for Garza, who leads the Big Ten in scoring.  CJ Fredrick had 17 points for Iowa. Joe Wieskamp had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Toussaint added 11 points.

D’Mitrik Trice led Wisconsin (12-9, 5-5) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Nate Reuvers had 13 points.

The Hawkeyes struggled with their shooting, going 20 for 60 from the field, including 3 of 20 on 3-pointers. But they game up with big plays in the closing minutes, including Fredrick’s 3-pointer with 5:08 to go that cut Wisconsin’s lead to 57-54.

Guard Kobe King, Wisconsin’s leading scorer, did not make the trip for personal reasons. King, who has started 19 games, is averaging 10 points per game.  Wisconsin hosts Michigan State on Saturday.

In the NBA, the Bucks host the Washington Wizards tonight. Milwaukee has the league’s best record at 40-6 and leads Miami and Toronto by eight games in the Eastern Conference.  Washington comes in at 15-30.

It’s Media Day today at Super Bowl 54 in Miami where San Francisco and Kansas City square off on Sunday.  Both teams arrived over the weekend.  The 49ers have won five Super Bowls while Kansas City is 1-1, having lost to the Packers in Super Bowl 1 and then beating Minnesota in Super Bowl 4 in 1970.

The Wisconsin Herd’s Jaylen Adams has been named the NBA G League Player of the Week. Adams led the Herd to a 3-0 record, with all three victories coming against teams with winning records. He comprised averages of 28.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 5.3

assists and 2.3 steals, while shooting 51.9% (28-54 FG) from the field and 40.0%

(10-25 3FG) from three.

To begin the week, Adams scored a season-high 39 points (11-18 FG, 6-12 3FG) and led Wisconsin to a 122-115 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive. The 39-point effort was the highest scoring output for a Herd player this season, and the performance is tied for the fifth-most points in a single game in franchise history. After leading the Herd in scoring against Santa Cruz, Adams capped the week by scoring 28 points (15 in the fourth quarter) in a six-point win over the Stockton Kings.

Adams is the second Herd player to garner the award this season, joining Dragan

Bender, who received the honor on Jan. 6.
