Man Killed By Winnebago County SWAT Team Had A History Of Violence

A man killed by Winnebago County SWAT Team members Tuesday night had a history of violence and fleeing from law enforcement officers. County Sheriff John Matz said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the man “put into motion a series of events” that led to his shooting death. He says four members of the SWAT Team were involved in the shooting and they’ve been placed on administrative leave during an investigation by the state Justice Department’s Division of Criminal Justice. That investigation is expected to be lengthy. The shooting happened at a residence in the 800 block of Grove Street in the Village of Fox Crossing where the Lake Winnebago Area drug unit was serving a search warrant and requested help from the SWAT Team because of the man’s history of violence. In July of last year he was suspected of dealing methamphetamine in Grand Chute. During contact with law enforcement he fled striking a squad car in the process. Earlier this month he was involved in an incident in the City of Neenah. He collided with a gas meter and struck a squad car while fleeing from officers. The next day his vehicle was recovered in the Town of Vinland. It had a stolen gun inside it that tied him to armed burglaries in Brown County. While the search warrant was being served at the residence in the Village of Fox Crossing community members were asked to shelter in place.
