Grothman Committee Held Hearing On The Census
The Government Oversight committee Congressman Glenn Grothman serves on recently had a hearing on the census. Grothman feels the President should be able to have the census question whether someone is a citizen of the country. “So believe it or not we will have no idea when we count the number of people in Green Lake or Fond du Lac County how many of the people are citizens and how many are not.” He says meanwhile some of the most liberal groups agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren that you can identify your own race on the census. The census also provides information that helps create political boundaries both at the national and state level and to determine federal funding levels.
DPI Audit Request
State Representatives Jeremy Thiesfeldt of Fond du Lac feels now is a good time for an audit of the state’s Department of Public Instruction. He and State Representative John Nygren of Marinette are calling for the audit, which some feel is long overdue. Thiesfeldt, a former teacher, says it is clear other states have discovered something that is causing their reading and math scores to improve at a rate that Wisconsin has not. “If we want to get down to the nitty gritty of why that is going on we need to exam what is going on at the top education agency in the state and that is the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.” Thiesfeldt believes the audit by the Legislative Audit Bureau wouldn’t be completed until the next legislative session. The last audit of the DPI was done in 1998. Nygren is Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Finance and Thiesfeldt Chair of the Assembly Education Committee.
School Crossing Zones Can Be Dangerous
Among the school crossing areas crossing guards work in the City of Ripon are some busy traffic areas. Police Chief Bill Wallner says a crossing on Metomen Street or State Highways 44/49 and East Sullivan Street has heavy traffic before and after school. “That intersection there Esther Acken is there for us and she does a great job she’s been a long time at that intersection, but that’s a high traffic area and you know we’ve had a number of incidents at that location officers have seen near-misses at that location.” In fact Acken was struck by a vehicle at that intersection a number of years from which she was able to fully recover. He says another busy crossing is on Oshkosh Street. Last week was Adult School Crossing Guard week in the state.
