Trial Scheduled In Dodge County Vehicular Homicide Case

A five day jury trial is scheduled in Dodge County this summer for the 23-year-old Beaver Dam woman suspected of driving drunk during a traffic crash that killed her boyfriend. Cindy Lara Esparza is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle in the death last April of 23-year-old Jared Frakes. She drove off the Madison Street Bridge in Beaver Dam. She suffered non-life threatening injuries when her vehicle ended up upside down in the river, but Frakes died in the crash. A blood test put her alcohol level at more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit. The trial begins August 31st.

Watertown Man Found Guilty Of Robbing Drug Dealer

A Dodge County jury Thursday found a 29-year-old Watertown man guilty of armed robbery and burglary charges. Charges against Tommie Plummer stemmed from an incident at a home in Watertown last May where Plummer and another man broke into the home and robbed the resident of $800 and two ounces of marijuana. Plummer admitted to detectives he was upset about being shorted on drug sales at the property and couldn’t understand why a drug dealer would call police about being robbed. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 17th.

Toddler Safely Returned Home In Waupun

Waupun Police forwarded a report to Dodge County Social Services after a 2-year-old girl was found wandering outside Monday night without proper winter clothing or supervision. A woman who had gone outside for a smoke called police shortly after 7 pm that evening to report seeing the girl. Police responded to the Westview Apartments in the 900 block of Brown Street. They were able to find the girl’s 21-year-old mother and return her to home, but sent a report on the incident to the Social Services Department.

Scammers Posing As Church Officials

Berlin Police say scammers will stop at nothing to find a way to part you from your money. They say the latest effort involves posing as the pastor or priest of a church. The scammer then gives a hard luck story about a family in need and asks the person they are calling or contacting to purchase gift cards and provide them with the pin numbers so they can help the family out. Police recommend doing your homework and checking with your church or the family that is supposedly in need to confirm the authenticity of the request before you make any purchase of gift cards.

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Ripon Police Captain Troy Damsteegt says while it’s nice to be appreciated they prefer to have public support in their efforts. Thursday was Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Damsteegt says they can’t do their job without the public’s support. “Oh our relationship with the public is extremely important we couldn’t do our job without the support of the people. It’s definitely not a job that we can do alone we need their cooperation their assistance and information when we are dealing with a variety of incidents and investigations.” He says sometimes people let you know they don’t care for law enforcement and on the other hand the majority of people do support what they do sometimes acknowledge it when they see an officer out in public. The Ripon Police Department has 14 sworn officers, a full-time administrative assistant, and six dispatchers.

Volunteering

The Ripon Area United Way depends on campaign donations, but Board of Directors President Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says many of the agencies they help fund also have a need for volunteers. Recently former Ripon Commonwealth Express publisher Tim Lyke wrote an editorial about volunteering. Puhlmann-Becker says Lyke captured the need perfectly. Lyke says volunteers are also needed to run for offices like Ripon Common Council or School Board or serve on other boards and committees. “The most patriotic thing we can do is not to salute the flag, not to say the Pledge of Allegiance, it is to get out there and support our community and by so doing supporting our world and certainly supporting our country will make us healthier, stronger, better.” Lyke says we need to step up and be a small cog in a large wheel because only with the small cogs does the wheel turn.
