Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings and Jeremy Peña homered and drove in four runs as the Houston Astros defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 on Wednesday.
Houston earned just its second victory in seven games to snap Milwaukee’s three-game winning streak and leave both teams with .500 records. The Brewers were attempting to sweep a series from the Astros for the first time since 2012.
The Astros led 3-1 before Peña broke the game open by delivering a three-run homer to left off reliever Elvin Rodriguez with two outs in the sixth inning.
Valdez (2-4) struck out seven while allowing three hits, two walks and one run to earn his first win since the Astros’ March 27th season opener He threw a season-high 101 pitches.
Milwaukee’s only run off Valdez came on Eric Haase’s fifth-inning homer, a 425-foot drive to center.
The Astros took a 1-0 lead off Quinn Priester (1-1) in the second inning as Jake Meyers hit a two-out single and scored on Zach Dezenzo’s double.
The Brewers have lost all 13 games this season in which their opponent scored first.
Five-time All-Star closer Josh Hader worked the ninth while pitching in Milwaukee for the first time since the Brewers traded him in 2022
The Brewers are off today before visiting the Tampa Bay Ray on Friday. Left-hander José Quintana (4-1, 2.83) will pitch for the Brewers.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Giants beat the Cubs 3-1, the Cardinals shutout the Pirates 5-0 and the Reds edged the Braves 4-3. The Cubs lead the Cardinals and Reds by three games, the Brewers by four and the Pirates are ten games out.
In the Midwest League on Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Peoria to the Chiefs 3-1. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.
In the NBA Playoffs Wednesday the Knicks nipped the Celtics 91-90 to take a 2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference series.
In the Western Conference the Thunder trounced the Nuggets 149-106 to tie their series at a game-each.
George Pickens is departing from the black and gold to provide Dak Prescott with an outstanding complementary target next to CeeDee Lamb.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday. Dallas will receive Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick, while Pittsburgh will get a 2026 third-round selection and a 2027 fifth-rounder, Rapoport added.
The Cowboys later announced the trade and release of wide receiver Seth Williams in a corresponding move.
An area charity softball game is reaching a milestone this year.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Green Bay Charity Softball game which will be held Friday, May 23 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love will host the game, which features Packers players and celebrities.
Although the roster for the game is not finalized yet, on Wednesday, Love did reveal another Packers quarterback will be joining him on the offense team: back-up Malik Willis.
The money raised will benefit Love’s Hands of 10ve Foundation.
Last year, longtime host of the charity softball game, former Packers player Donald Driver, handed his hosting duties to Love Driver is also expected to be in attendance for the game this year, interacting with fans.
Tickets are still available for purchase online. The cost is $80 for a premium box seat (first two rows), $55 for a standard box seat, $35 for a reserved bleacher seat and $15 for a general admission grass seat. There are also a limited number of patio tables, which seat four, available at $300.
