Fond du Lac firefighters responded to a residence on North Park Avenue Saturday evening shortly before 6 pm for a structure fire following an explosion. Police got there first and reported the fire was in a portable fire pit in the driveway. One of the residents had suffered multiple burns. Fire crews extinguished the fire in the fire pit. Paramedics treated the injured person for burns to his hands, arms and face. He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment. It was determined the victim tried to light a fire pit by using gasoline from a gas can on cardboard in the fire pit. The gas ignited the cardboard and followed the gasoline up to the can where it blew up in his hands and ignited his clothing. The force of the explosion was strong enough to blow the top of the can off the container. It was not found. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue officials remind residents to never use gasoline or other flammable liquid to light any type of recreational fire. (Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue photos).
