Christian Yelich hit a grand slam in the 10th inning for his first career-walk-off homer, giving the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
With Joey Ortiz on at second, Brice Turang lined a four-seam fastball off Liam Hendriks (0-2) for a base hit that moved Ortiz to third. Jackson Chourio walked. One out later, Yelich drove a 1-1 pitch 400 feet over the wall in right-center.
Yelich had tied the game in the ninth inning with an opposite-field double off closer Aroldis Chapman and later scored on Sal Frelick’s base hit.
Rob Zastryzny (1-0) got the final two outs in the 10th for the win.
Ceddanne Rafaela snapped a 0-for-13 slump with a ground-rule double that chased Milwaukee starter Aaron Civale in the sixth. Rafaela advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch by Aaron Ashby.
It was looking good for Boston until Chapman’s first blown save of the season.
Richard Fitts began the game after just being reinstated from the 15-day injured list with right pectoral strain. Brennan Bernardino handled the fourth.
Greg Weissert pitched a 1-2-3 fifth and got one out in the sixth before Justin Wilson got the final two outs and two in the seventh. Justin Slaten finished the frame and the eighth, too.
Marcelo Mayer had two of Boston’ seven hits.
Brewers Sal Frelick caught Trevor Story’s fly in shallow right field and threw out Mayer, on with a double, at third to end Boston’s fifth.
The Red Sox used seven pitchers.
RHP Brayan Bello (2-1, 4.08 ERA) goes for the Red Sox in the finale of the three-game series. RHP Freddy Peralta (5-3, 2.55) starts for the Brewers. First pitch is at 12:10 at American Family Field. In other games in the NL Central Tuesday the Cardinals beat the Orioles 7-4, the Reds downed the Royals 7-2, the Cubs nipped the Rockies 4-3 and the Pirates over the Diamondbacks 9-6. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by three games, the Brewers and Reds remain 6 ½ back and the Pirates are 14 ½ games back.
In the Midwest League on Tuesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Peoria Chiefs at Fox Cities Stadium, 5-4. The T-Rats rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3, ultimately winning with a walk-off single by Blake Burke in the ninth inning.
Peoria (18-27) scored three runs on five hits in the top of the first against José Quintana.
Quintana, who was making a rehab start for the Milwaukee Brewers, retired the next nine batters he faced after the first and did not allow another run as he completed four innings on 72 pitches. He walked one and struck out three.
The teams play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10.
In the Northwoods League on Tuesday, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders won their home opener 4-3 over the Madison Mallards.
This win was also a much-needed one for the Dock Spiders who ended a nine game losing streak to the Mallards that stretched back to July 30, 2023. The two Great Lakes West rivals met for the 74 time tonight in which the season series between them remained relatively balanced up until last year. The season series is now tied between the Dock Spiders and Mallards with two more games against each other in the next two days. Today the team’s play at 11:35 at Herr-Baker Field.
Tyrese Haliburton had 32 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds without a turnover in a sensational postseason performance to lead the Indiana Pacers past the New York Knicks 130-121 on Tuesday night for a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.
With his father, John, back in Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Haliburton carried the Pacers within a victory of their second trip to the NBA Finals. Game 5 is Thursday in New York.
Pascal Siakam added 30 points while Haliburton had four steals in his second career postseason triple-double – the first in NBA playoff history in which a player had at least 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds with no turnovers. Obi Toppin’s 3-pointer with 46 seconds left sealed it.
The Pacers have not lost consecutive games since March 10.
Jalen Brunson scored 31 points. Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and OG Anunoby finished with 22 points. But the Knicks couldn’t rally from another double-digit deficit.
It marked the first time in the series the home team won.
Nearly a dozen former Pacers players, including Jermaine O’Neal and Lance Stephenson, joined Haliburton’s father in the heavily gold-clad crowd. So did WWE Hall of Famer Triple H, rappers Rob 49 and 50 Cent and singers John Mellencamp and Jelly Roll.
John Haliburton had been forced to watch Indiana’s previous eight postseason games from afar after he ran onto the court and confronted Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo following his son’s last-second shot to eliminate Milwaukee in the first round. The Pacers allowed him to return for Game 4 and he sat in a suite.
The series shifts to New York Thursday night with the tipoff slated for 7:00.
In the Western Conference Finals tonight in Oklahoma City, the Thunder can wrap up their series with a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Thunder lead 3-1.
