27 May 2025 Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Jackson Chourio homered on the opening pitch from Garrett Crochet, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Monday.

Milwaukee pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on consecutive doubles by Joey Ortiz and Andruw Monasterio.

Milwaukee starter Chad Patrick pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking two and striking out six. DL Hall, fresh off the 60-day injured list, came on to relieve Patrick with Jarren Duran on second base. Hall retired Rafael Devers on an easy ground out to first to end the threat.

Hall (1-0) pitched out of a jam in the seventh by getting Duran to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Red Sox plated a run in the eighth but the Brewers regained a two-run cushion on Eric Haase’s infield single with the bases loaded.

Duran’s run-scoring single in the ninth pulled the Red Sox within a run.

Trevor Megill earned his 10th save in 11 tries but had to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam.

After winning four of five, the Red Sox lost their third straight while scoring a total of four runs in those contests.

Crochet (4-4) gave up five hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out 11, marking his eighth career start with 10 or more strikeouts.

Chourio’s first-inning home run, a 413-footer to left, marked the first career leadoff homer for the 21-year-old outfielder. It was also the Brewers’ first leadoff home run this season.

The Red Sox haven’t named a starter for Tuesday’s game, with manager Alex Cora saying it will likely be a bullpen game. Aaron Civale (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will start for the Brewers. First pitch is at 6:40 from American Family Field. Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday the Cubs beat the Rockies 3-1, the Orioles downed the Cardinals 5-2, the Diamondbacks shutout the Pirates 5-0 and the Reds beat the Royals 7-4.  The Cubs lead the Cardinals by three games, the Brewers and Reds by 6 ½ and the Pirates are 14 ½ out.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League. Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers host the Peoria Chiefs with the first pitch at 6:40 from Fox Cities Stadium.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders opened their season in Madison losing to the Mallards 6-1. The Dock Spiders have their home opener tonight, hosting the Mallards with the first pitch is at 6:35 at Herr-Baker Field.

In the NBA Western Conference Finals Monday night, Oklahoma City won at Minnesota over the Timberwolves, 128-126, to take a 3-1 lead in their series. Game five is Tuesday night in Oklahoma City.

Tyrese Haliburton’s father will be allowed to attend Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals, meaning his ban from attending Indiana Pacers games following an on-court confrontation with Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier in the playoffs has ended.

John Haliburton is expected to be seated in a suite Tuesday night when the Pacers host the New York Knicks, in hopes of avoiding a repeat of what happened in Game 5 against the Bucks.

Indiana holds a 2-1 lead over New York.

John Haliburton has not attended any of the Pacers’ eight games — home or road — since running onto the court and yelling in Antetokounmpo’s face after his son made a last-second layup in overtime to send the Bucks home in the first round for the third straight year.

Instead, John Haliburton has been seen in a local Indianapolis bar celebrating his son’s feats, such as making a buzzer-beating shot to force overtime in Game 1 against the Knicks — a game Indiana won at New York.

Tyrese Haliburton was not made available to reporters on Monday, when the Pacers confirmed their decision to lift the ban on his father.

Game 6 would be in Indianapolis, if necessary.

Sunday Alex Palou became the first Spaniard to win the Indianapolis 500.  Marcus Ericsson finished second, followed by David Malukas in third, Pato O’Ward in fourth and Felix Rosenqvist in the fifth.

Following Friday’s 14-1 game one loss and a 5-2 win Saturday in game two of Super Regionals, UW Oshkosh faced WIAC rival UW Whitewater in a series decider with winner moving on to play in the World Series this week in Eastlake, Ohio.

After a scoreless first inning of work, Tians junior pitcher Connor Walters found himself in some trouble in the 2nd. Twice Warhawks loaded the bases, however three hits and a hit-by-pitch only resulting in one run off a SAC fly. Warhawks jumped ahead 1-0.

3rd inning, a UWW solo home run from Andy Thies increased their lead to 2-0, but later a Jack McKellips diving catch saving a potential run. Titans half of frame, Logan Schill producing a first base hit but did not advance past 1st.

The game went in complete control for UW Whitewater in 4th inning, scoring 4-runs kick started by a leadoff Titans infield error and a 2-run bomb from Dominik McVay two pitches into the next at bat. Walters replaced by Brett Gaynor and 6-0 Warhawks lead by the time the 4th inning came to an end

In the 5th inning Thies hit another home run  and all told, the Warhawks hit four long balls and Warhawks hit four long balls in a 10-0 win to end the Titans season.
