5/24/25 Lecture Series at Town Square Invites Public to Explore Contemporary Art

24 May 2025 News

This summer, Art MidWisconsin and Town Square invite the public to dive into the fascinating world of contemporary art through a three-part lecture series designed to inform, inspire, and ignite curiosity. The Summer Evening Art Lecture Series will be hosted at Town Square Community Center, 492 Hill Street in Green Lake, with each session held from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The cost is $6 per session, and all are welcome.

Led by Travis Nygard, an award-winning college professor with a PhD in art history and cultural studies from the University of Pittsburgh, the series makes complex art topics approachable for everyone. Nygard’s teaching spans global and regional perspectives, and his research interests are as eclectic as the art itself—from the pop culture iconography of Andy Warhol to the murals of the Corn Palace and the economics of fine art.

Part III: We Called It Scribbling in Kindergarten: Abstraction Actually Isn’t So Easy
Tuesday, July 1 Get to the heart of abstract art and understand the intentional choices behind the chaos. This session explores how artists use shape, color, and gesture to communicate ideas beyond realism.

“This series is all about giving people the tools to understand contemporary art and connect with it in meaningful ways,” said Travis Nygard. “Once you understand the stories behind the work, you see the world—and art—differently.”

The Summer Evening Art Lecture Series is presented by Art MidWisconsin and hosted at Town Square as part of a broader effort to bring accessible, high-quality arts education to the Green Lake community.
