Christian Yelich homered twice and the Milwaukee Brewers breezed past the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 in a game interrupted by rain Thursday night.

Yelich hit a three-run drive against rookie Mike Burrows (0-1) in the first inning and a solo shot off reliever Isaac Mattson in the sixth for the 11th multi-homer game of his career. Joey Ortiz added his second home run this season for the Brewers. Sal Frelick provided some breathing room with a late two-run single.

Carlos Rodriguez (1-0) struck out Bryan Reynolds with two on and two out in the sixth following a rain delay of 1 hour, 50 minutes, to earn his first major league victory. Trevor Megill came on with two on and no outs in the ninth to secure his eighth save.

Milwaukee’s Aaron Civale gave up two runs and four hits over four innings in his first start since going to the injured list in late March with a strained hamstring.

Spencer Horwitz had two hits for the Pirates, including a solo shot to right-center leading off the fourth for his first home run since being acquired by Pittsburgh in the offseason. Horwitz added an RBI groundout in the ninth to help the Pirates avoid making a bit of unwanted history.

Pittsburgh had gone 26 games without scoring at least five runs, tying the team with four others for the longest such streak of futility in MLB history.

Burrows, called up Wednesday after Pittsburgh sent struggling Carmen Mlodzinski to Triple-A Indianapolis, had some early jitters. The 25-year-old right-hander gave up four runs during his first trip through the Brewers’ order before retiring nine of the final 11 batters he faced.

The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 5:40.

There were no other games Thursday in the NL Central on Thursday. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by three games, the Brewers and Reds are 5 ½ games out and the Pirates are 13 ½ behind.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at South Bend 5-2. The play again tonight at 6:05.

In the NBA Western Conference Finals Oklahoma City took a 2-0 lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 118-103 victory at home Thursday night.

The series shifts to Minnesota Saturday night.

The NBA Eastern Conference Finals continue tonight in New York where the Knicks host the Indiana Pacers in game two of their series. The Pacers lead 1-0.

The Milwaukee Brewers activated pitcher Aaron Civale off the 15-day injured listThursday, clearing the way for him to start the opener of a four-game series against Pittsburgh.

Civale was placed on the injured list with a strained left hamstring in March. He had made just one start this season, allowing five runs in three innings of a blowout loss to the New York Yankees on March 30.

Milwaukee also recalled right-hander Carlos Rodriguez from Triple-A Nashville, where he was 3-1 with a 1.99 ERA in nine games.

To make room for Civale and Rodriguez, the Brewers sent reliever Easton McGee to Triple-A and designated veteran reliever Joel Payamps for assignment.

Jordan Love will get to show off his arm in a different sport. The Green Bay Packers quarterback will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before Monday’s Milwaukee Brewers game, the Brewers announced on social media.

The Memorial Day game between the Brewerrs and the Boston Red Sox begins at 1:10 p.m. at American Family Field.

It will be Love’s second appearance on a ball diamond over the long holiday weekend. He is hosting the annual Green Bay Charity Softball Game Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Some tickets remained available as of midday Thursday.

The UW-Oshkosh Titans have reached the College World Series as a member of either the NCAA or NAIA 20 times in the program’s history. Yet, they’ve never been to the Super Regionals, which just came into existence at the Division III level in 2019.

This weekend they just need two wins to punch their ticket back to the College World Series.

Awaiting the Titans in the Super Regionals is a familiar foe, WIAC rival UW-Whitewater. It will be the fifth time UWO has squared off with the Warhawks in the playoffs, but first since 2003.

The Titans and Warhawks begin their best of three series at noon on Friday in Whitewater.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders open the season Monday at Madison against the Mallards.

Fond du Lac will begin the home portion of their ninth season of Northwoods League play on Tuesday, May 27 against the Madison Mallards at Herr-Baker Field.

Information about ticket packages is currently available at dockspiders.com or by calling the ticket office at (920) 907-9833. Visit the Dock Spiders ballpark Box Office and Team Store during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
