Gabriel Arias had a three-run double in the fourth inning, José Ramírez stole three bases and five Cleveland pitchers combined on a shutout as the Guardians beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 on Monday night.

Arias hit a deep fly ball to center field with two outs and the bases loaded off starter Freddy Peralta (4-3). Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio got a bad read on the ball and he missed it by a couple inches as it dropped over his left shoulder, scoring three runs.

Prior to Arias’ hit, Ramírez stole second and third base. He stole third in the sixth inning, giving him 255 in his career to move past Terry Turner for third on the franchise’s all-time list.

It is the third time in Ramírez’s career and first since 2021 he has had three stolen bases in a game.

Cleveland starter Ben Lively went three innings before leaving after a couple warm up pitches in the fourth due to right forearm inflammation. Jakob Junis, Kolby Allard, Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis went the rest of the way for the Guardians’ fifth shutout of the season.

Kyle Manzardo and Carlos Santana also had RBIs for Cleveland.

Peralta struck out four, giving him 1,001 for his career. He is the fourth Milwaukee pitcher to reach 1,000 strikeouts, joining Yovani Gallardo, Ben Sheets and Teddy Higuera.

Milwaukee sends right-hander Quinn Priester (1-1, 5.08 ERA) to the mound. Cleveland will go with left-hander Logan Allen (1-2, 4.33 ERA). First pitch is at 5:10 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Cardinals nipped the Phillies 3-2, the Mets slipped past the Pirates 4-3 and the Cubs over the Marlins 5-2. The Reds had the day off. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by a game, the Brewers and Reds are four behind and the Pirates are 10 games out.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (14-19) are back home tonight, hosting the Beloit Sky Carp, with the first pitch at 6:40 from Fox Cities Stadium.

The Packers will visit the Chicago Bears on Saturday, December 20th, aa part of an NFL doubleheader. The game will be played at either 3:30 CT or at 7:00 CT.

The NFL will also release its International Games on Tuesday.

The full NFL schedule is slated to be released on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT.

The Packers defense took big steps in year one under Jeff Hafley. Now the defensive coordinator wants to see the unit evolve in year two.

Green Bay finished the season sixth in total defense. Their first time being in the top ten when it comes to yards allowed since 2010 (5th).

Playing at that level is not just a benchmark for Hafley, but rather the jumping off point they are trying to get to during the offseason.

The defensive coordinator conceding their will be changes with plenty of new faces on the roster.

General manager Brian Gutekunst adding a pair of edge rushers, Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver, during the draft. As well as signing free agent cornerback Nate Hobbs.

The biggest question surrounding the Packers defense right now is in regard to corner Jaire Alexander.

A report by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky in late April said all options remain on the table in terms of the future of the two-time All-Pro cornerback.

The Packers could still trade, release or keep Alexander on the roster.

Also missing during the offseason program is offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins.

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said Jenkins’ absence is due to other reasons besides moving from guard to center.

Green Bay signed guard Aaron Banks in free agency. Prompting the Packers to move Jenkins to center to fill the spot left by the departure of Josh Myers.

There will also be plenty of competition across the line this year. Head coach Matt LaFleur saying Rasheed Walker and Jordan Morgan will compete for the left tackle spot.

The UW-Oshkosh softball and baseball teams are headed to their respective NCAA Division III tournaments.

For the third consecutive year the UW-Oshkosh softball team will host one of the 16 regionals from Thursday to Saturday at the UW-Oshkosh Softball Park. The Titans (36-6) won the WIAC Tournament title which secured the conference’s automatic bid to the national tournament.

The Titans will play Concordia University Wisconsin (31-11) on Thursday at 11 a.m., and the teams have already faced each other twice this season and Oshkosh won by scores of 8-0 and 10-3. In the other regional matchup Thursday, Central College (Iowa) (26-11) and UW-Stevens Point (28-12) play each other.

Three more games will be played Friday and at least one will be played on Saturday with a potential game set for the final day of the regional if necessary.

Meanwhile, the UWO baseball team is returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018 and will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) for the Saint Peter, Minnesota Regional from Friday to Sunday.

The Titans (31-13) will play the University of Chicago (Ill.) (26-14) on Thursday. The teams faced each other in Lexington, Kentucky earlier this season and Chicago won, 11-2 on March 16.

Gustavus Adolphus College (36-7) will face Beloit College (30-14) in their first game on Thursday.

After Friday’s tournament-opening games, three games will be played on Saturday and at least one will be play on Sunday with a potential game set for the final day of the regional if necessary.
