CORRECTIONS OFFICERS APPRECIATED

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Jim Borgen (pictured) says they appreciate the opportunity to celebrate the hard-working men and women who run the County Jail. Borgen is the Jail Administrator and made some comments as National Correctional Officers Week came to a close last week. He says the people in their correctional program have to wear a lot of hats for the inmates they oversee. He says in any given day they are dealing with people with mental health, substance abuse, personal crises and more. He says their officers may have to be a counselor, mediator, mentor, emergency responder, or problem solver. Borgen notes that in addition to their corrections officers, they have kitchen staff, and two teachers who provide instruction to youth in their juvenile detention facility. In 1984, President Ronald Regan issued a proclamation establishing the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week.

DIVERSE OPTIONS SUMMER PROGRAM
Once again this summer Diverse Options will offer a program to keep high school students busy during the summer months. Noreen Johnson of Diverse Options says they had the program last year and students seemed to enjoy it. She says they usually have a class that will teach students something and they also have time for outings to places like a zoo or planetarium. Students learn things like responsibility, self-control, how to use a kitchen and more. She says more importantly it gives students structure so they have a routine until they return to school in the fall. Johnson says for the students it is an enrichment opportunity in a small group setting.
