Jake Bauers hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 on Wednesday night for their third straight victory.

Tied at 3 going into the eighth, Milwaukee loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single before Bauers ripped a shot into the gap in right-center field.

Caleb Durbin drove in his eighth run of the season on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 in the eighth.

The Brewers have gone 12-1 in their last 13 games against the White Sox, including eight straight wins. Milwaukee is also 8-1 in its last nine games at Rate Field, including seven straight victories.

William Contreras went 2 for 3 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Contreras singled to right in the first for a 1-0 lead and scored when Gage Workman, making his first start for the White Sox, let a soft grounder go under his glove.

It was the first of a season-high three errors for the White Sox, who have lost three straight games and fell to 7-23.

Milwaukee used six pitchers after starter Tobias Myers allowed two earned runs in two innings. Jared Koenig pitched an inning of relief for his second win of the season. Trevor Megill struck out two in the ninth to earn his third save.

The teams wind up their series this afternoon with the first pitch at 1:10.

In the NL Central Wednesday the Pirates nipped the Cubs 4-3 and the Cardinals beat the Reds 9-1.  The Cubs lead the Brewers and Cubs by two games while the Cardinals are four games out and the Pirates six games behind.

Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff gave up just three hits with no earned runs in 5.2 innings in his second rehab stint of the season with the Timber Rattlers as the T-Rats beat Wests Michigan 4-2.

Woodruff is now expected to make one more minor league appearance with Triple-A Nashville, where he has made two rehab appearances as well in his return from missing all of 2024 with a shoulder injury.

“I know my 30 day window is coming up, but honestly, I don’t try and look at the end of that tunnel. I try to take each and every outing for what it is, come out of it healthy and just reassess and get to the next outing, and once we feel like we are in a good spot, I feel like my delivery and health wise is in a good spot, then I’ll be ready. Today was a definitely a step towards that,” said Woodruff.

Woodruff has until May 11 until his minor league rehab stint closes.

The Timber Rattlers host West Michigan tonight with the first pitch at 6:40 from Fox Cities Stadium.

Houston Astros pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh made his major league debut against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.

A seventh-round pick in 2022 out of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Blubaugh joins the Astros after posting a 4.29 ERA in five outings, four of them starts, this season with 28 strikeouts over 21 innings. He is the first pitcher from that school to reach the majors.

Blubaugh (0-1) struck out two in a 1-2-3 first and gave up seven runs — two earned — and five hits in four innings with six strikeouts and a walk.

The 24-year-old Blubaugh is taking the rotation spot of Hayden Wesneski, whose next start has been pushed back after he showed diminished velocity during his April 25 outing in Kansas City.

Wesneski’s next start could come during the Astros series in Milwaukee on May 5. He is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA through five starts this season.

In the NBA playoffs Wednesday night the Rockets beat the Warriors 131-116 to take a 3-2 lead in their series and Minnesota won its series over the Lakers in five games with a 103-96 win in Los Angeles.

Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton was so excited about Indiana’s improbable overtime rally that he didn’t realize what led to the postame scuffle between his teammates and the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.

Then he got to the locker room, watched the replay and winced when he saw his father, John, on the court, confronting two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“I had no idea it happened until I got back to the locker room and they showed me the video of my pops,” the two-time All-Star said after he made the decisive layup with 1.3 seconds left to give Indiana a 119-118 victory and a 4-1 series win. “We had a little talk about it. I don’t agree with what transpired there. I think basketball is basketball and let’s keep it on the court. I think he just got excited.”

Antetokounmpo wasn’t pleased, either, after his team blew a seven-point lead in the final 40 seconds of overtime, sending the Bucks to their third straight first-round exit. The two-time MVP didn’t recognize John Haliburton, thinking he was just another fan who had run onto the court.

Antetokounmpo said he likes Haliburton, calling him a great competitor, but he said John Haliburton displaying a towel with his son’s image while yelling “this is what we (expletive) do” was wrong.

“I feel like that’s very, very disrespectful,” said Antetokounmpo, who finished with 30 points, 20 rebounds and 13 assists.

Haliburton seemed genuinely upset about the incident, promising to reach out to Antetokounmpo before the teams play again.

“I’ll talk to Giannis about it eventually,” said Haliburton, who grew up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. “I don’t think my pops was in the right at all there. It’s unfortunate what happened at the end there.

“It’s unfortunate what happened there (the scuffle), but I think it’s just competition,” he added. “As far as my pops, I don’t agree with what happened there. We’ll have a conversation.”

The prank call to Shedeur Sanders during the NFL Draft wasn’t related to the ones other players received, a person familiar with the league’s investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Tyler Warren, Kyle McCord, Mason Graham and Chase Lundt also have reported receiving prank calls.

The call to Sanders, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, made headlines Sunday when the Atlanta Falcons said defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son was responsible. Sanders received a prank call on Friday night, the second day of the draft, while waiting after entering the draft especting to be a first-round pick.

The Falcons released a statement saying 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich “unintentionally came across the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.”

The league provided phone numbers to teams for only the 15 players who attended the draft in Green Bay and the players who were participating in virtual interviews with NFL Network and ESPN. Sanders and Warren were among those doing virtual interviews.

Though Jax Ulbrich provided the number, he was sitting beside an unidentified friend who actually made the call to Sanders.

The Falcons said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact. They offered “sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family” in their statement, and Jax Ulbrich also posted a public apology on social media.

Sanders, a standout quarterback from Colorado, is the son of Buffaloes coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who began his NFL career with the Falcons.

Lundt, an offensive lineman from UConn, was selected in the sixth round by Buffalo. He said he received several prank calls.

McCord, the former Syracuse quarterback who was taken by the Eagles last weekend, told Philadelphia-area media that someone tried to prank him while the draft was ongoing.

The father of Cleveland’s top pick, former Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham, told the Detroit Free Press that someone had made a TikTok while calling Graham and showed his number on video. “His phone was getting called nonstop,” Allen Graham told the Free Press via text message.
