The Green Bay Packers did something in the first round of the NFL draft that they hadn’t done since 2002.
The host team for this year’s NFL draft selected a wide receiver, taking Texas’ Matthew Golden at No. 23 overall on Thursday night.
The previous time the Packers took a wide receiver in the opening round was 23 years ago when Javon Walker went 20th.
The 21-year-old Golden is coming off an excellent junior season in which he had 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. During nine of the Longhorns’ games, Golden averaged 20 yards per catch.

A speedster, clocking a 40-yard dash time of 4.29 seconds, Golden joins a young Packers wide receiving group. Green Bay is looking for a true No. 1 receiver with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton and Malik Heath all playing integral roles on last season’s team.
Reed was the Packers’ leading receiver in 2024 with 857 yards. Watson added 620 yards and Doubs came through with 601 yards. Green Bay has not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Davante Adams in 2021.
Day two of the draft continues today. The Packers have the 54th overall pick in round two and the 87th overall pick in round three. Rounds four through seven are Saturday. Green Bay went into the draft with eight overall picks.
The Tennessee Titans had the first overall pick and took Washington State quarterback quarterback Cam Ward.. Day two starts tonight at 7:00.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said at least 125,000 fans were in attendance for the day one of the three day draft. The NFL estimated the attendance at 205,000. Last year an overall estimated 250,000 people attended the draft in downtown Detroit.
Shedeur Sanders is still on the board following the first round of the NFL draft. The New York Giants passed on the former Colorado quarterback twice, including with the No. 3 pick Thursday night. Las Vegas (at No. 6), the New York Jets (No. 7), New Orleans (No. 9) and Pittsburgh (No. 21) also said no thanks to Sanders, and that’s four teams seemingly in need of a signal caller.
How far will Sanders fall now?
He will definitely be available when the second round begins Friday. There was some thought a team would trade into the bottom end of the first round and grab Sanders. But no one did.
The Giants looked like they might. They sent three picks to Houston for the 25th overall selection and then chose Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart over Sanders. TV cameras showed a solemn Sanders family watching and waiting in Texas.
Concerns about Sanders’ arm strength have become an issue in recent weeks, although his father, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, laughed at that notion. In 50 collegiate games, Shedeur Sanders threw for 14,347 yards, with 134 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He completed 70.1% of his passes and ran for 17 more scores.
Mike Yastremski and Matt Chapman homered as the San Francisco Giants rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Thursday to take three of four games in the series.
Yastrzemski hit a solo homer, finished with two RBI and scored twice. Chapman hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning.
San Francisco trailed 5-4 when Tyler Fitzgerald opened the eighth by drawing a walk from Tyler Alexander (1-2). Fitzgerald moved to third on a single by pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores and a groundout moved pinch-runner Christian Yelich to second.
Yastrzemski hit a grounder to second baseman Brice Turang, who was playing in. Turang’s throw to the plate was high and Fitzgerald slid safely to tie the game at 5, with Koss moving to third.
Trevor Mcgill replaced Alexander and Willy Adames, a former Milwaukee shortstop, pulled a liner to left that was misplayed by Christian Yelich. Koss scored on the sacrifice fly and Adames reached on the Yelich error.
Reliever Tyler Rogers (2-0) struck out three in the eighth inning. Camilo Doval worked the ninth and earned his fifth save.
Yelich, Rhys Hoskins and Sal Frelick had RBI hits for the Brewers.
Tonight the Brewers open a weekend series in St. Louis against the Cardinals. First pitch is at 7:15.
There was one other game in the NL Central Thursday as the Angels nipped the Pirates 4-3. The Cubs increased their lead to three games. The Reds are 3 1,2 games out, the Cardinals 5 ½ and the Pirates are six games out.
In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Cedar Rapids, pounding the Kernels, 13-5. The T-Rats (6-12)broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the eighth and tacked on seven in the ninth to earn their first win of the series against the Kernels..
Game four of the series is Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Bishop Letson (0-0, 2.45) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has named Alejandro Hidalgo (0-0, 6.55) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 6:35pm.
In the NBA Playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks will try to break the ice and win their first game against the Detroit Pistons as the series shifts to Milwaukee. The Pistons won the first two game at home in the best of seven game series. Tipoff is at 7:00 at Fiserv Forum.
