WAUPUN MAN FACING DRUG CHARGES

As a result of a Dodge County Drug Task Force investigation a 19-year-old Waupun man is facing 16 different charges including cocaine trafficking and possession, marijuana possession, 8 felony counts of bail jumping, and more. Bond was set at $10,000 cash during Aaron Montes’ initial court appearance Wednesday and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Thursday. Charges stem from a traffic stop Tuesday morning and a subsequent search of his home in the Town of Chester that afternoon. BEAVER DAM SCAM ALERT

Beaver Dam Police are warning residents after seeing an increase in calls reporting scammers claiming to be with a federal agency. Police say the scammers are asking people to send them money through gift cards, crypto or other means. Recently one scammer sent a photo of an “ID” to a victim in Beaver Dam. The ID was for a “Jason Matthews” claiming he was an agent with the Federal Trade Commission. Police say it looks real, but is just another tool used to frighten the victim into making a bad decision regarding sending money or disclosing sensitive information. Police urge residents to contact them or talk with someone they know and trust if they feel something isn’t right. They point out once you send a scammer the gift card numbers or deposit money into a cryptocurrency ATM, your money isn’t likely to be recovered and there is little police can do to help. DRUG TAKE BACK DAY SATURDAY

The state’s Department of Justice tells us more than 170 events are planned across Wisconsin tomorrow for National Drug Take Back Day. In Wisconsin 275 law enforcement agencies will be participating in the take back events. State residents are encouraged to dispose of unwanted and unused medications. Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the community about the potential abuse and consequences of improper storage and disposal of these medications. State Attorney General Josh Kaul says there are hundreds of permanent drug disposal boxes in Wisconsin where you can dispose of your unwanted and unused medications throughout the year. Many police stations, some hospitals and pharmacies have permanent drug drop boxes. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has an online list of those sites.

FDL COUNTY JAIL PROJECT UPDATE

Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says they are in the discussion phase of taking a look at renovating the existing jail or building a new one. The Public Safety Committee decided it would be best if they held joint meetings about the jail project with the Highway, Airport, and Facilities Committee. Kaufman says it makes sense because the committees have responsibilities unique to their committees. Kaufman says they first have to consider whether it is possible to renovate the current jail or build a new jail in the parking lot across the street. The other possibility is a new facility out at the Highway Department grounds. But first he ordered soil borings at the current site and in the parking lot across the street. That will clear up speculation on whether the ground is stable enough to support a build. Results of the soil borings will become available next month. The findings will be presented to the joint committee and they will decide whether an engineer should be hired to take a look at stabilizing the existing jail and what the cost may be.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT BENEFITS RHS STEM WING

The STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics wing at Ripon High School now houses four beautiful, museum-quality display cases to showcase the Science Department’s collections. The project began as an idea for an Eagle Scout Project for a scout from Troop 735 and was launched nearly a year and a half ago. The scout knew that the school needed professional-grade display cases, but the cost was far beyond the Science Department’s budget. From researching designs and fundraising to sourcing materials and coordinating volunteers, every step of the project was taken with care, purpose, and a heart for service. The results are stunning display cases that enhance the school environment and help celebrate science and learning each day.
