4/2/25 Election Stories
2 April 2025 News

SUPREME COURT AND DPI RACES
Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford defeated Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel in Tuesday’s election for the State Supreme Court picking up 55 percent of the vote. It was the most expensive court race in history possibly exceeding $100 million. Crawford’s win keeps the court under a 4 to 3 liberal majority, as it has been since 2023. A liberal justice is not up for election again until April 2028, ensuring liberals will either maintain or increase their hold on the court until them.
In the race for State Schools Superintendent, incumbent Jill Underly collected nearly 53 percent of the vote to defeat challenger Brittany Kinser. A big issue in the race was state testing standards.
REFERENDUM VOTING
Voters statewide overwhelmingly embraced requiring photo ID to vote approving amending the State Constitution to require it with nearly 63 percent of voters voting for the requirement.
In other referendum voting Town of Brooklyn voters approved their referendum while City of Green Lake voters defeated a question that would have allowed the city to exceed its tax levy for operational purposes. Voters in the Fond du Lac, North Fond du Lac, Oakfield, and Wautoma School Districts voted down referendum questions. Meanwhile Oshkosh and Waupun School District approved their referendum questions.
