17 April 2025 Sports

Christian Yelich, Rhys Hoskins and Sal Frelick all hit home runs Wednesday and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-1.

Milwaukee took two of three in the series.

The Brewers pushed across a run in the second off Keider Montero (0-1) when Garrett Mitchell tripled with one out and scored on Oliver Dunn’s sacrifice bunt. Dunn became the first Brewers player to use a “torpedo” bat during the plate appearance.

Yelich connected for a solo home run with one out in the third. Hoskins hit a two-run blast later in the inning to push Milwaukee’s lead to 4-0.

José Quintana (2-0), making his second start of the season after pitching seven shoutout innings in his Brewers debut on Friday, held the Tigers to one run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 36-year-old left-hander, who signed as a free agent on March 5, surrendered a solo home run to Spencer Torkelson with one-out in the sixth. He struck out four and walked three.

Frelick’s lead-off homer against Montero in the Brewers half of the sixth, his first of the season, gave Milwaukee a 5-1 lead.

Montero, who made his season debut for the Tigers after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo, gave up five runs in five innings and departed after two batters in the sixth. He walked one and had eight strikeouts.

Four Brewers relievers combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings.

Quintana walked three batters in the first inning but kept the Tigers off the board. After issuing a lead-off walk to Justyn-Henry Malloy, Quintana got Gleyber Torres to ground into a double play. Quintana walked the next two batters before Riley Greene grounded out to end the inning.

Milwaukee catcher William Contreras extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a first-inning single.

The Brewers are off today. RHP Freddy Peralta (1-1, 2.31) will take the mound on Friday when the Brewers start a three-game set at home against the Athletics.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cardinals beat the Astros 4-1, the Padres downed the Cubs 3-2, the Pirates over the Nationals 6-1 and the Reds lost to the Mariners 5-3/. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a game, the Reds and Cardinals are 1 ½ games behind and the Pirates are four games back.

The Brewers have announced that RHP Brandon Woodruff will continue his shoulder rehab with an appearance for the Timber Rattlers on Friday in Grand Chute.

Woodruff is slated to pitch in the second game of a doubleheader with Lansing. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.

Woodruff, a 2-time All-Star, has been working back from the shoulder surgery he underwent at the start of the playoffs two seasons ago. In a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on April 12, Woodruff threw 66 pitches, striking out 5 batters while allowing 2 runs in 5.2 innings pitched.

Manuel Rodriguez pitched six scoreless innings and turned a 1-0 lead over to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bullpen on Wednesday afternoon against the Lansing Lugnuts at Neuroscience Group Field. However, Rodriguez could only watch as the Lugnuts scored three times in the top of the eighth inning and go on to a 3-1 victory.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Thursday evening. Anthony Flores (0-1, 4.50) has been named as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lansing plans to send Kyle Robinson (1-1, 1.29) to the mound. Game time is 6:40pm.

When comparing overall performances of specific Green Bay Packers positions from 2023 to 2024, one of the biggest setbacks was at interior defensive line.

Heading into last season, the transition to the new 4-3 system under first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, there was strong feeling that it might be one of the strongest units.

A year later, there are some question marks in that depth chart from top to bottom.

A noticeable decline was from veteran Kenny Clark. After a Pro Bowl, 7 1/2-sack season in 2023 and a $54 million extension last summer, Clark registered just one sack in 2024.

While 2022 first-round pick Devonte Wyatt was on the field for less than 200 snaps last season, and then they lost key back up TJ Slaton to free agency.

Both interior starters have somewhat uncertain futures after the 2025 season: Clark has a $31 million cap hit coming in 2026, while Wyatt is heading into the final year of his rookie contract.

Some names for the Packers to keep an eye on if they do look to bolster the interior of that DL in the draft with the 23rd pick.

They’ve hosted Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen. He was a first-team All-American, as well as first team All-SEC.

There was not nearly enough pressure on quarterbacks from the Green Bay Packers’ defensive front in 2024.

In fact, Green Bay ranked 22nd in the NFL in pressure percentage, defined as times when a quarterback is sacked, hit or under duress.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said he believes the defensive linemen they have currently will improve in year two under defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

So, the Packers likely won’t be trading up snag top edge prospect Abdul Carter. But they won’t need to.

According to NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein, the strongest group talent-wise in this year’s draft can be found at the edge position.

Two pass rushers the Packers may consider taking in the first round are Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart and Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. — who both met with the Packers on pre-draft visits.

Stewart was already projected to be a first round draft pick. But after the combine, he solidified himself as one.

The 6-foot-5, 267-pound edge ran the 40-yard dash in 4.59 seconds while also achieving a perfect 10 relative athletic score.

A lot has been made though of his minimal sack totals in college, with just 4.5 total sacks across three seasons at Texas A&M.

At the combine, Stewart said that’s been a topic of conversation with NFL teams and shared where he can improve at the next level.

As for James Pearce Jr. — he doesn’t fit the usual mold of a Packers’ edge — aka big and bulky.

He’s 6-foot-5 but weighs just 245 — but his speed makes him stand out. He ran a 4.47 40 at the combine and not only is quick at getting to the quarterback, but quick at changing directions as well.
