Quinn Priester and four relievers combined on a one-hitter and Rhys Hoskins broke out of his early-season slump to help the Milwaukee Brewers snap a three-game skid by beating the Detroit Tigers 5-0 on Tuesday night.

In his second start since the Brewers acquired him from the Boston Red Sox last week, Priester (1-0) held the Tigers hitless until he allowed a leadoff double to Gleyber Torres in the sixth. Priester departed at that point, having struck out four and walked three.

Jared Koenig, Abner Uribe, Nick Mears and Grant Anderson didn’t allow Detroit any baserunners the rest of the way.

Hoskins had been 8 for 44 with just one extra-base hit in his first 15 games of the season before going 3 of 4 with a homer on Tuesday. Hoskins put Milwaukee ahead for good by leading off the second with a 440-foot drive over the center-field wall on an 0-1 fastball from Jack Flaherty (1-1).

Sal Frelick followed the Hoskins homer by hitting a triple to right before scoring on Garrett Mitchell’s sacrifice fly.

The Brewers extended the lead in the fourth, as Mitchell hit a two-out double off the top of the center-field wall and came home on a bloop hit from Joey Ortiz. Milwaukee then scored two unearned runs in the seventh.

The game’s most unusual play came in the bottom of the seventh. The Brewers had runners on the corners when William Contreras grounded to first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who attempted to throw out Brice Turang at second. Torkelson’s throw hit Turang’s back but bounced directly to shortstop Trey Sweeney, who caught the ball while keeping his foot on second base to retire Turang.

Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio drew his first walk of the season in the first inning – on his 78th plate appearance of the year.

RHP Keider Montero (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starts for Detroit and LHP José Quintana (1-0, 0.00) pitches for Milwaukee as this three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 1:10 from American Family Field.

Meanwhile, the Brewers recalled Logan Henderson from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, bolstering a pitching staff dealing with multiple injuries.

Heading into its game aginst Detroit, Milwaukee owned a 4.93 ERA that ranked 28th in the majors, ahead of only the Colorado Rockies (4.99) and Washington Nationals (5.50).

The Brewers made room for Henderson by sending right-hander Elvin Rodríguez to Nashville. Rodríguez had an 0-2 record and a 7.53 ERA in four appearances, though he had allowed only one run over five innings of relief Monday in a 9-1 loss to the Tigers.

Henderson is expected to work out of the bullpen for now, though he has started in all 47 of his career minor league appearances. He was 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA in three games with Nashville this season while striking out 24 and walking 10 over 14 innings.

He gave up five runs in his first start of the season but has thrown 10 shutout innings since. In his last appearance, he struck out eight while allowing no hits and two walks in five innings.

Henderson will try to boost a pitching staff that has been decimated by injuries. The list of Brewers pitchers on the injured list includes Aaron Ashby (right oblique), Aaron Civale (left hamstring), Nestor Cortes (left elbow), Robert Gasser (left elbow), DL Hall (left lat), Tobias Myers (left oblique), Connor Thomas (left elbow) and Brandon Woodruff (right shoulder).

All those injuries have taxed a bullpen that was one of Milwaukee’s greatest strengths last year, when the Brewers won a second straight NL Central title.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Nationals shutout the Pirates 3-0, the Reds beat the Mariners 8-4, the Astros blanked the Cardinals 2-0 and the Cubs nipped the Padres 2-1 in 10 innings. The Cubs lead the Reds by 1 ½ games, the Brewers by two, the Cardinals by 2 ½ and the Pirates by five games in the division. First pitch is at 12:10 from American Family Field.

In the Midwest League Tuesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at home to the Lansing Lugnuts 2-0. The teams play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10 from Fox Cities Stadium

The Milwaukee Bucks said Damian Lillard has made “significant improvement” in his recovery from deep vein thrombosis in his right calf but they haven’t indicated when the seven-time all-NBA guard might start playing again.

The update comes as the Bucks get ready to begin their postseason. Milwaukee, the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, has its first playoff game Saturday at fourth-seeded Indiana.

“Damian’s most recent weekly scan shows that his injury has significantly improved which will enable him to move ahead safely with increased basketball activity,” general manager Jon Horst said Tuesday in a statement. “Damian’s health remains our No. 1 priority. We have followed strict protocols and will continue to do so. We are pleased with the positive news about Damian’s progress.”

The Bucks said Lillard would continue to increase his on-court basketball activity. Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers said after the Bucks’ Tuesday practice that Lillard’s on-court activity has essentially involved shooting and other non-contact work.

Rivers was asked if there’s any possibility Lillard could play in the opening-round series.

Lillard last played in a game on March 18. The Bucks announced a week later that Lillard was dealing with deep vein thrombosis an abnormal clot within a vessel where the congealing of blood blocks the flow through on the way back to the heart.

The 34-year-old Lillard finished the regular season ranked 10th in scoring (24.9) and 10th in assists (7.1). He earned his ninth All-Star Game selection this year.

Milwaukee went 10-4 without Lillard over its last 14 regular-season games and enters the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has stepped up his performance by averaging 31.8 points, 12 rebounds and 11.8 assists in six April games and collecting triple-doubles in four of them. Kevin Porter Jr.’s playing time has increased in Lillard’s absence, and he has responded by averaging 20.2 points over his last five games.

Jaire Alexander was Brian Gutekunst’s first-ever draft pick in 2018. The Green Bay Packers general manager took him 18th overall.

Alexander was twice named an All-Pro and he signed a four-year, $84 million extension in 2022. However, his status for the final year of his contract is in question.

“Obviously, we invested a lot in Jaire. We want to make sure if he’s not on our football team, helping us win games, that we get something back for that investment, so we will see where it goes,” Gutekunst said at the NFL league meetings in early April.

It’s one of the biggest questions the Packers face this offseason: What does the future hold for oft-injured cornerback Jaire Alexander?

Will the Packers trade him, or risk bringing him back at a cost of $17.5 million on the salary cap?

When asked if there was a possibility if Alexander plays for the Packers in 2025, Gutekunst had this to say: “Could be a possibility, absolutely, but I think we are kind of in the middle of that right now.”

Alexander’s availability will affect the Packers’ draft plan — and already did in free agency, as they  signed Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million deal with a $16 million signing bonus.

“We have had our eyes on Nate for a couple of years now. We really like his ability to play on the outside, which he hasn’t done a ton of,” Gutekunst said.

At the NFL league meetings in April, Gutekunst said it would be nice to have a resolution come the draft.

If Green Bay does draft a corner in the first round, keep your eye on Kentucky CB Maxwell Hairston. He doesn’t fit the Packers’ typical mold, as he weighed in at 183 pounds at the NFL Combine. All but one of Brian Gutekunst’s cornerback picks have weighed at least 191 pounds.

Wisconsin offensive tackle Kevin Heywood is expected to miss all of the upcoming season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice.

Heywood, the Badgers’ projected starter at left tackle, hurt his knee in practice Thursday. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell revealed the severity of the injury on Tuesday.

Wisconsin had benefited from remarkable stability on its offensive line during the first two years of Fickell’s tenure.

The Badgers had the same starting offensive line for each of its 12 games last year, with Jack Nelson at left tackle, Joe Brunner at left guard, Jake Renfro at center, Joe Huber at right guard and Riley Mahlman at right tackle. Brunner, Renfro and Mahlman are back this year.

Wisconsin also had the same starting offensive line for all 12 of its regular-season games in 2023, with Nelson at left tackle, Huber at left guard, Tanor Bortolini at center, Michael Furtney at right guard and Mahlman at right tackle. The only change that season came in the ReliaQuest Bowl loss to LSU, with Renfro getting to start after missing the entire regular season with an injury to his lower left leg.

Heywood was expected to take over this season for Nelson, who had started at left tackle each of the last three years. Heywood had participated in all 12 games for Wisconsin last year while playing special teams and making occasional appearances on offense.

His injury represents a setback for a Wisconsin team seeking to bounce back after its streak of 22 consecutive winning seasons and bowl appearances ended last year. The Badgers finished 5-7 last season and lost their final five games.
