Columbia County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a fatal accident that occurred after the driver fled from a hit and run accident Saturday night. The driver of a passenger car had crashed on Highway 16/51 at the Duck Creek bridge in Portage. The driver died at the scene. Deputies learned the car was southbound on Highway 16/51 and tried turning onto Suburban Heights Road, striking a Jeep that was stopped at the intersection. The passenger car left the scene of that initial crash. It headed north on Highway 16/51 and struck the bridge over Duck Creek in the Town of Pacific. Occupants of the Jeep were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. The fatal crash was reported shortly after 7:30 Saturday evening. The deceased driver’s name was not released.
