11 April 2025 Sports

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 28 points and 11 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks extended their winning streak to six games with a 136-111 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night.

Kevin Porter Jr. had 20 points and seven assists, Kyle Kuzma and Gary Trent Jr. each scored 17 points, Bobby Portis added 14 and Ryan Rollins finished with 12 for the Bucks.

Milwaukee moves on to an important two-game, regular-season ending series against the Detroit Pistons on Friday and Sunday.

Lester Quinones scored 21 points and Jamal Cain and Keion Brooks Jr. each had 20 as the Pelicans dropped their fifth straight game. Antonio Reeves scored 16 while Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Karlo Matkovic contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds apiece.

With Indiana’s win over Cleveland, the Pacers clinched the No. 4 seed in the East, meaning Milwaukee will start the playoffs on the road. The Bucks will have to win one of two upcoming games against Detroit to claim the No. 5 seed.

Milwaukee led 89-80 in the third quarter before going on a 9-1 run that included a 3-pointer and a layup by Gary Trent Jr. It helped the Bucks get far enough ahead to begin resting their starters.

Antetokounmpo’s run of consecutive triple doubles ended at three.

Milwaukee is at the Detroit Pistons on Friday in the opener of a home-and-home set.

Brenton Doyle tied his career high with five RBIs, hitting a leadoff homer in the first inning, a run-scoring single in the seventh and a bases-clearing double in the eighth to lead the Colorado Rockies over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 on Thursday.

Zac Veen doubled for his first career RBI as the Rockies avoided a three-game sweep and improved to 3-9.

Doyle also had five RBIs against Boston last July 24.

Milwaukee went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

Isaac Collins tied the score 2-2 in the eighth when he hit into a run-scoring double play against Scott Alexander (1-1).

Michael Toglia, who had three hits, hit an RBI double in the bottom half against Joel Payamps (0-1) and Doyle hit a two-out double off the wall in left-center for a 6-2 lead.

Veen, who made his major league debut Tuesday night, followed with a double to right.

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single in the eighth. Chourio had three home runs, two doubles, six extra-base hits, 12 RBIs and a stolen base before Thursday, and according to the team he became the fourth player to compile those numbers in three straight games, joining Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Shohei Otani.

Brice Turang, who hit safely in Milwaukee’s first 12 games, was 0 for 5 and hit a game-ending groundout.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1, 6.10) starts tonight as the Brewers open a three-game series at Arizona, which goes with RHP Nick Pivetta (1-1, 2.70). First pitch is at 8:40 CDT.

There were no other games Thursday in the NL Central. The Brewers trail the Cubs by a game in the division.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers erupted for six runs in the top of the tenth to win at Quad Cities over the River Bandits, 9-4. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.

44-year old Justin Rose managed to steal the spotlight from the Masters dominance of Scottie Scheffler and the endless quest of Rory McIlroy to complete the career Grand Slam, to take the first round lead.

Rose shot a 7-under 65 and even with a bogey on the final hole, it was a special first round.

He opened with three straight birdies. He ran off three in a row around the turn. And he wound up with a three-shot lead over Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg and Corey Conners.

Scheffler did his part in his bid to win a third Masters green jacket in four years, playing a bogey-free round of 68.

McIlroy, so desperate to win this major and complete the career Grand Slam, was right there with him until the end. He took a pair of double bogeys late in the afternoon with careless mistakes and had to settle for a 72. It was the seventh straight time he failed to break 70 in the opening round of the Masters.

The average score was 73.6. Only six players broke 70, and 20 others broke par.
