4/1/25 Hometown Broadcasting Sports Tuesday

1 April 2025 Sports

Kris Bubic struck out eight in six shutout innings in his first start in nearly two years, and the Kansas City Royals spoiled Milwaukee’s home opener with an 11-1 victory over the winless Brewers on Monday.

Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez homered for the Royals. Jonathan India had three hits and drove in two runs one day after he was struck on the left side of his face by a 98.9-mph pitch from Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase.

Bubic (1-0) allowed three hits and walked two in his first start since April 15, 2023. The 27-year-old left-hander had Tommy John surgery later that month, and he filled a relief role in all 27 of his appearances last season, going 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA.

The two-time defending NL Central champion Brewers are 0-4 for the first time since 2015, when they finished 68-94.

Garcia connected for a 428-foot drive to center on a 2-1 fastball from Elvin Rodriguez (0-1) in the second. Perez went deep on a 2-2 slider from Elvis Peguero in the seventh, sending a 418-foot drive just inside the left-field foul pole.

Brewers associate manager Rickie Weeks was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Brennan Miller after arguing a ball-strike call from the dugout in the seventh.

After India and Bobby Witt opened the game with back-to-back singles, Rodríguez retired the next two batters and seemed on the verge of getting out of the inning until Michael Massey ripped a 1-1 fastball that bounced over the left-field wall for a ground-rule RBI double. Hunter Renfroe followed with a two-run single.

The Brewers have been outscored 47-15 through their first four games. They opened their season by getting swept in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Right-hander Michael Lorenzen starts for the Royals as the three-game series continues Tuesday. Chad Patrick will start for the Brewers.  The first pitch is set for 6:40 from American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Reds pounded the Rangers 14-3, the Rays over the Pirates 6-1, the Angels nipped the Cardinals 5-4 and the Cubs downed the A’s 18-3.

In the NBA tonight the Bucks (40-34) host the Suns (35-49). Milwaukee is 6th in the Eastern Conference. Tipoff is at 6:30 from Fiserv Forum.

Paige Bueckers finished with 31 points and six assists  as the UCONN Huskies defeated  No. 1 seed USC in the Spokane 4 Regional final Monday night. The win sends UCONN to the final four.

Freshman Sarah Strong added 22 points and 17 rebounds, making  her the second freshman in NCAA tournament history with a 20-point, 15-rebound game in the Elite Eight or later.

The #2  Huskies  play #1 UCLA Friday night.

The Green Bay Packers are going international once again, and this time on a more permanent basis, with the NFL announcing on Monday that the Packers have been awarded marketing rights to Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom through the NFL Global Markets Program.

“The Packers are pleased to officially establish a presence in Germany, Ireland, and the UK to engage with current and future Packers fans in those markets,” said Packers COO and general counsel Ed Policy. “The opportunity to further develop our worldwide reach, which has grown as we’ve played internationally in two of the last three seasons, is very exciting for our organization. We look forward to investing in our international growth and building long-term relationships with fans, businesses, and organizations in each international market.”

The Packers are one of 11 teams in Germany, five teams in Ireland and nine teams in the UK, and are one of 29 clubs to activate through the league’s Global Markets Program.

While the Packers have not been formally awarded rights until now, the organization has spent recent years conducting the necessary research and analysis to determine when and how to take part in the program.

The Packers have initially selected Germany, Ireland and the UK due to the existing fan base, cultural fit and opportunity for further expansion and growth in these countries.

The organization may bid on other countries in the future as opportunities continue to grow.

The Packers will formally launch specialized international marketing efforts later this year, including events and programming, targeted digital initiatives, specially curated content and other fan engagement opportunities.

The team will pursue activities across their international markets that will connect new audiences with Wisconsin’s unique charm and Midwestern character, inspiring affinity for northeast Wisconsin and the entire state.

Monday’s announcement also allows the Packers the potential to broaden corporate partnerships globally and sell sponsorship rights in these designated markets.

For more information ahead of the formal launch of the team’s international efforts later this year, please visit packers.com/international.

Before its involvement in GMP, the team’s recent international efforts have included playing two regular season contests internationally, one in London (2022) and one in Brazil (2024) and three international preseason games in Toronto (1997), Tokyo (1998) and Winnipeg (2019).

The organization has also been involved in the Global Sports Mentoring Program, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of State and espnW that provides international women in sport with mentorship opportunities from American sports industry executives.

Packers representatives have also visited Morocco to support “We Can Morocco,” an organization that empowers girls and women to realize their potential through leadership courses and American football sessions while also engaging with men to discuss the role they play in advancing gender equality.

First launched in 2022, the Global Markets Program is part of the NFL’s long-term, strategic effort to enable clubs to build their brands globally while driving fan growth beyond the U.S. NFL clubs can apply for rights to international markets by submitting proposals to the International Committee for review each spring.

Clubs are awarded rights for at least a five-year term through the program, and during this period can pursue activities in that international market that are consistent with what they can do in their home market.
