OSHKOSH SEX OFFENDER FINDS PERMANENT HOUSING

Oshkosh Police say a 59-year-old sex offender who was homeless when he was released from prison on February 11th to live in the city has found permanent housing. Timothy Young is now living at 644 Frederick Street. He is on GPS monitoring the rest of his life and on probation until February 17th, 2045. Young was convicted in 1984 of first-degree sexual assault and in 2005 of first-degree sexual assault of a child. Both convictions were in Winnebago County. The victims were prepubescent girls he knew. Young was incarcerated at Racine Correctional Institution.

DODGE COUNTY SHERIFF SPEAKS TO PRISON PROPOSALS

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says before going ahead with the Governor’s plan to close Green Bay Correctional Institution and renovating Waupun Correctional the state has to do something about prison overcrowding. He points out there are 750 beds at Green Bay Correctional and housing units would have to be closed at Waupun Correctional for renovation. He says the state prison system is already overcrowded by more than 5,400 inmates and that will increase by another 1,000 in the next two years. He says you should never be at maximum capacity and the national standard is at about 85 percent. He says the state needs to reduce its inmate population by about 9,000 inmates. Governor Evers proposal would somewhat alleviate that with early release. Schmidt says that goes against the reason judges imposed some sentences, and the state already has an issue with under staffing of probation and parole. He says probation agents can’t adequately monitor parolees if they are overseeing 100 or more at a time.

CONGRESSMAN GROTHMAN INTRODUCES BILL TO PROTECT TAXPAYERS

Congressman Glenn Grothman recently introduced legislation that will overturn a Biden-era rule that would give broad authority to nearly every IRS employee to levy fines against taxpayers. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says, “Joe Biden is gone, but the wake of his policy mistakes linger.” He adds that the rule would embolden the IRS to increase the number of unjust penalties against Americans. He says it is a lame-duck rule that flies in the face of President Trump’s mission to make our government more transparent and efficient. The bill is supported by Americans for Tax Reform, the National Taxpayers Union, and the Taxpayers Protection Alliance. It is cosponsored by Republican Congressmen Tom McClintock of California and Greg Steube of Florida.

CELEBRATING FFA

Berlin Schools Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says they took an extra week the past few weeks to fully appreciate their FFA chapter. It’s been around 87 years with 100 members and about 63 of those members very active in the chapter. Durtschi says members learn about leadership and it has nice ties to the area’s agricultural heritage. Last June their FFA chapter invited Durtschi to attend the state convention in Madison with them. It left him impressed and confident the future of our kids is a bright one. The Berlin FFA chapter had some fun with their celebration last Friday with a ‘Kiss the Calf’ fundraiser. (Photo credit: Berlin Area School District).
