Austin Wells became the first catcher to hit a leadoff homer on opening day, as the New York Yankees began their American League pennant defense by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Thursday. Devin Williams, an All-Star closer acquired from Milwaukee in December loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth on two hits and a walk. He gave up Brice Turang’s sacrifice fly, then struck out Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich for the save. Chourio fanned five times, two more than his previous high. The Brewers Freddy Peralta says it was weird seeing Devin Williams in Yankee pinstripes.

Both teams are off today. The series resumes in New York tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 pm.

Sydney Crosby the 37-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins captain last night secured his 14th career 80-point season with a first period goal. Crosby’s goal against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday secured the 20th point-per-game season for the Pittsburgh Penguins captain, breaking a tie with Wayne Gretzky. Because Crosby missed two games this season due to injury, the maximum number of games he can play this season is 80. Among all active NHL players, Crosby is ninth in points with 1,676 and his goal was the 26th of the season and the 618th of his career.

Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been charged in a federal dogfighting case after 190 dogs were seized from him in October under the Animal Welfare Act. Johnson played five seasons in the NFL with the Packers, Cardinals, and Giants.

The Milwaukee Bucks tonight host New York. Their five-game West Coast swing ended Wednesday night with a 127 to 117 loss to the Denver Nuggets. The Bucks are 40 and 32 on the season while the Knicks are 45 and 27. The game starts at 5 pm.
