Waupun Fire Department responded to 320 East Main Street in Waupun Friday night for an odor of gas. When they arrived, firefighters discovered a gas line and meter had been sheared off at ground level resulting in a gas leak. Buildings on the north side of the 300 block were evacuated. Additionally, East Main Street and North Madison Street were temporarily closed to ensure public safety. Alliant Energy crews arrived and were able to control the gas leak within 30 minutes. Fire personnel worked alongside Alliant Energy staff to inspect the affected buildings and ensure they were safe for re-entry. Within two hours all evacuees were allowed to return to their residences and businesses. In total, 20 people were evacuated, and 20 properties experienced gas service disruptions. No injuries were reported.
