5 February 2025 Sports

From Wayne Mausser

John Tonje had 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and No. 21 Wisconsin continued its home domination of Indiana by beating the slumping Hoosiers 76-64 on Tuesday night.

Wisconsin (18-5, 8-4 Big Ten) has won its last 21 home games against Indiana, the Hoosiers’ longest road losing streak against any opponent. The Hoosiers’ last victory over the Badgers in Madison came on Jan. 25, 1998, in the inaugural season of the Kohl Center.

Indiana (14-9, 5-7) has lost four straight overall.

Max Klesmit scored 13 points for Wisconsin. Nolan Winter had 12 and Carter Gilmore finished with 10.

Mackenzie Mgbako had 15 points for Indiana, and Luke Goode added 11.

Wisconsin grabbed a 19-2 advantage in the first 4½ minutes by shooting 5 of 6 from 3-point range and 6 of 7 overall. The Badgers extended the lead to 26-4 a few minutes later.

 Wisconsin visits Iowa on Saturday.

Kadary Richmond had 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as No. 12 St. John’s beat No. 11 Marquette 70-64 on Tuesday night in their showdown for first place in the Big East.

RJ Luis Jr. added 17 points and 11 boards for the Red Storm (20-3, 11-1), who have won nine straight games and 15 of 16. Zuby Ejiofor had 13 points and 13 rebounds to help St. John’s improve to 15-0 at home before a roaring Madison Square Garden crowd of 16,521 that included New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Chase Ross had 16 points on 4-of-13 shooting for the Golden Eagles (18-5, 9-3), who were whistled for 24 fouls and had four players finish with at least four. Kam Jones scored 13 of his 15 in the second half.

Luis played all 40 minutes and made a huge impact on defense, too, with four steals and three blocked shots.

With its highest ranking in 25 years, St. John’s is off to the program’s best start since 1985-86.

Marquette plays Saturday at Creighton, looking to sweep the season series.

A longtime Green Bay Packers player announced his retirement from the NFL. Former kicker Mason Crosby made the announcement Tuesday on his radio show, The Mason Crosby Show.

Crosby spent 17 seasons in the NFL, 16 of them with the Packers. He was a part of the team’s Super Bowl winning season in 2010-2011.

He holds the Packers’ title for all-time leading scorer with 400 field goals.

Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde, who got his start with the Green Bay Packers, is retiring from playing professional football after 12 seasons.

While news of Hyde’s impending retirement spread last week, the NFL made the official announcement on X late Tuesday morning.

The Packers picked Hyde from the University of Iowa in the 5th round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in Green Bay for four seasons. He played in all 16 games in his rookie season as a reserve cornerback.

In 2014, he was the team’s primary punt and kick returner. His average 15.8 yards per punt return ranked #1 in the NFL that season and #3 in franchise history for any player with at least 14 returns.

When the Packers didn’t re-sign him in 2017, he was signed by the Buffalo Bills. He immediately contributed and earned a Pro Bowl selection that season and AP All-Pro 2nd Team honors two years in a row.

He was the Bills’ team captain for three years — 2021, 2022 and 2023. He suffered a neck injury and spent most of 2024 as a free agent but was brought back on the team’s practice squad in December.

Andy Reid said Tuesday he would return for at least one more season as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I enjoy being around the guys,” Reid said as the Chiefs prepared for Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles

“I enjoy the football games. You can’t put in the hours that we do and not enjoy it. So, I really love the game.’

‘Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said he didn’t think Reid was close to the end of a coaching career that to this point has included 301 wins (including playoffs) and three Super Bowl championships.

“He’s always said that he’ll know when the time is right and I’m sure he’ll share it with me before he shares it with everyone else,” Hunt said. “At least I hope so, but I don’t sense that he’s anywhere close to being done.”

Reid, who coached the Eagles for 14 seasons before joining the Chiefs in 2013, turns 67 next month.

Hunt said he has been so certain Reid would return that he hasn’t put together a list of possible replacement candidates.

“I don’t think we’re close enough to that point where you have to keep that ready list,” Hunt said. “A lot changes every year in terms of the coaching landscape, so I think that’s premature.”

Hunt also said tight end Travis Kelce has not told the Chiefs he will play in 2025, though Kelce told reporters after the Chiefs arrived in New Orleans that he planned to play at least one more season.
