19 February 2025 News
Governor Tony Evers unveiled his proposed $119 billion biennial state budget last night. It would increase state spending by 20 percent. The Governor said, “I’m asking the Legislature to approve a budget that does what’s best for our kids at every stage, in every way, and no matter where they live in our state.” He is calling 2025 the Year of the Kid. He’s also calling for investing money in the battle to keep PFAs out of drinking water, giving nearly $2 billion in tax relief. He also talked about protecting farmers who could be hurt by President Trump’s Tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico. The budget also includes plans to revamp the Department of Corrections which would affect Waupun Correctional Institution and close Green Bay Correctional Institution. The proposed budget now goes to the Joint Finance Committee.

A member of the Joint Finance Committee, Republican State Representative Alex Dallman calls Governor Ever’s proposed state budget, “reckless, wasteful, and irresponsible.” The state lawmaker from Markesan says, “It is clear that Governor Evers wants to exponentially grow government and turn Wisconsin into a spendthrift state like Illinois or California.” He says growing government is not the answer.
Republican State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac says, “Governor Evers has once again presented a budget chalked-full of unchecked spending, more government, and higher taxes. His so-called budget is nothing more than a wish list that fails to prioritize investments in our state’s future.”
