NASHOTAH MAN CONVICTED OF STALKING FDL COUNTY WOMAN

A Fond du Lac County jury Friday convicted a 36-year-old Nashotah man of stalking, violation of an injunction, unlawful use of a telephone, and felony bail jumping. Judge Andrew Christenson revoked Zackery Olson’s bond, ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set a sentencing date of April 17th. Olson faces a maximum sentence of up to 44 years in prison on the 16 counts. According to the criminal complaint Olson harassed a Town of Lamartine woman with a series of phone calls and text messages between December 31st, 2020 and March 1st of 2021 despite a valid harassment injunction prohibiting communication with the victim in person, by writing, or by telephone until December 3rd of this year. District Attorney Eric Toney says, “This defendant engaged in years of vulgar and disturbing stalking behavior. These convictions were made possible because of the incredible courage the victim demonstrated throughout this ordeal and her brave testimony at trial, something nobody should have to endure.” The case was investigated by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mark Bensen.

COMPETENCY HEARING ORDERED FOR SCHABUSINESS

A competency exam has been ordered on a new felony charge for the 27-year-old Green Bay woman sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder and dismemberment of a Green Bay man. Taylor Schabusiness is serving a life sentence at Taycheedah Correctional Institution. She is accused of attacking a prison guard at the prison. She was in Fond du Lac County Court Friday for a hearing on a battery by prisoners charge stemming from an incident at the women’s prison last July 24th. According to the criminal complaint Schabusiness lunged at a nurse who was trying to remove a staple from Schabusiness’s arm in a medical room at the prison. The guard, a sergeant at TCI, intervened and was allegedly hit with a small metal table the nurse was using. Pepper spray was used to subdue Schabusiness. Later the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. She told the investigating Fond du Lac Police Officer she had been hit in the head, suffered bruised ribs, and a sore arm in the attack. The nurse was able to make it safely out of the room during the struggle which was caught on the victim’s body camera. Schabusiness had attacked an attorney representing her in Brown County Court while she was being prosecuted for the Green Bay man’s murder.

DEPUTY TO THE RESCUE

One of those receiving awards from the Fond du Lac County Law Enforcement Executive Association this past week was a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Correctional Deputy who helped thwart a robbery attempt in Oshkosh last September. Mary Jo Annis was off-duty when she stopped at a Kwik Trip Store in the 200 block of West 20th Avenue to get her fussing child a cheeseburger. While she was in the store she saw a 22-year-old Oshkosh man try and grab the gun out of the holster of an armed guard who was loading an ATM machine with cash. Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says she wasn’t armed but her training took over and she intervened. She grabbed the suspect’s arm, got control of him and shoved the gun back into the guard’s holster and got him off of the guard. He says she took the suspect to the ground and others helped hold him down until police could arrive. Waldschmidt says from what the suspect was saying he had dangerous and even deadly intentions. The Award for Valor was presented to her during the Association’s annual awards banquet last Wednesday.

TOP CONSUMER COMPLAINTS FOR 2024

For the fourth year in a row landlord-tenant issues topped the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection consumer complaints list. With 2,525 complaints it was number one on the list. Michelle Reinen is the Administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection. She says there are a few things tenants can do to avoid those issues. They include keeping documentation, reviewing things before you enter into an agreement, and keep the lines of communications open with your landlord if you do have problems. Telemarketing complaints used to be number one on the list but the advent of smartphones and technology has reduced the number of those complaints. Still it was number two on the list with 1,513 complaints. Reinen says complaints included phishing, spoofing of phone numbers, imposter scams, robocalls, and calls from telemarketers on the do-not-call list. Coming in number 3, 4, and 5 on the list were home improvement, identity theft, and telecommunications. The bottom five included medical services, motor vehicle repair, motor vehicle sales, travel, and motor vehicle accessories.

STURGEON UNIQUE FOR WISCONSIN

A conservation warden with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the state’s lake sturgeon population is something that is unique. Bill Hankee says it is a tribute to all of those including the DNR and stakeholders groups who fought to preserve and grow the sturgeon population. Over the years a number of sturgeon weighing over 100 pounds and some tipping the scales at over 200 pounds have been taken out of Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. Hankee says preserving the habitat of the system has also been a key factor. This past weekend was the opening weekend of the 2025 sturgeon spearing season. The past few years has seen the season go the entire 16 days.
