TRAFFIC SIGN VANDALISM IN GREEN LAKE COUNTY
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office is looking for tips about vandalism to traffic signs. One example of that vandalism is a stop sign in the Town of Brooklyn at Skunk Hollow Road. The sign was shot in a neighborhood with homes nearby, and then pushed over by a vehicle. Officials say a crash with injuries or death could have resulted from the lack of a stop sign. They also point out that townships and municipalities have tight budgets and limited resources to maintain roads and signs. If you know who is responsible or have information on similar vandalism you are asked to text Crime Stoppers. Text GETTHEM to 847411 or call the Green Lake County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-GET-THEM, that’s 1-800-438-8436. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for rewards up to $1,000. LIFE CHALLENGES AFFECT STUDENT SCORES
Berlin Schools Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says demographics do matter when it comes to doing well on state report cards for school districts. He says overall this past November they fell about a star on their achievement levels. He says part of that was tied to growth. Durtschi says 22 percent of their students have disabilities and they also have a higher rate of student mobility or students who don’t live in a district long because of economic factors. He says if you factor in that 50 percent of their students qualify for free or reduced lunch, then the school district has about 380 public school districts out of 426 that are doing better than Berlin. He says life particularly love, care, food, and housing all impact on a student’s wellbeing and how they are learning in school.
FAKE LOTTERY SCAM
The Administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection warns residents to be on the lookout for fake lottery scams. Michelle Reinen says they recently received a complaint from someone who had received a letter informing them that they had won $1 million. To gain the person’s trust they were also sent a “non-cashable sample check” for $16,000. The letter explains the person had been automatically entered in the lottery by making a credit card purchase at a “participating grocery store or gas station.” She says the letter will ask the person to call a phone number, warning that after failed attempts to reach them by phone, the letter itself was the final notice before their account was canceled and their winnings were lost. In order to access the winnings, they would need to pay over $10,000 in fake taxes and fees. The person was asked to keep their fake winnings a secret for “security and media release purposes.”
