FATAL CRASH IN COLUMBIA COUNTY

A 16-year-old girl from Pardeeville was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Columbia County’s Town of Wyocena Sunday morning. Just after 7:30 am Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to West Bush Road for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree and was upside down. When deputies and first responders arrived they found a heavily damaged vehicle and its driver, the lone occupant, who was unresponsive. The teen had died at the scene. Speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Initial evidence shows that the vehicle was approaching Groth Road; it lost control and entered a ditch where it struck a tree. The driver was wearing her seatbelt.

ANOTHER SHOOTING INCIDENT IN FDL

Fond du Lac Police handled another shooting incident Thursday. Police officers arrested a 21-year-old Fond du Lac man that evening on a traffic stop following a shooting in the 400 block of West Scott Street. Chief Aaron Goldstein says the weapon involved was an air-powered rifle designed to shoot pellets. He says any firearm has the potential to cause harm. They initially responded to an apartment complex in the 400 block of West Scott Street for a report of a man that had shot a shotgun two to three times. He fled in a vehicle. Later an officer located him in his vehicle. The 21-year-ol was taken into custody. A short time after that, officers were informed of a 30-year-old Fond du Lac man at St. Agnes Hospital with a gunshot wound.  The man was involved in the shooting at West Scott Street. He had been shot at three times with an air-powered rifle designed to shoot pellets. Two shots missed and one shot hit the victim’s upper arm. The suspect was taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail, where he faces multiple criminal charges. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

QUEST MURRAY PARK

The Ripon School Board has given the go ahead to the unification of Quest Charter School and Murray Park Elementary School. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says the charter school’s agreement comes up for renewal at the end of this school year. She says after seeing what was accomplished with the merger of the Journey Charter School and Barlow Park Elementary, the Quest Governance Board asked about doing the same. Jesse Johnson who started out as a teacher at Quest is the principal for Murray Park Quest Elementary School. She says she is pleased to have been able to work her way up through the school since Quest started in 2010. She began as the school’s principal last July.  Quest was a project based learning charter school. Whitrock says that innovation will be incorporated into the curriculum when the two schools merge in the fall. She adds that the two schools already had done quite a bit of collaboration.

SERVING ON BOARDS AND COMMITTEES ENCOURAGED

Berlin Schools Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says he is glad he had the opportunity to serve on the Berlin City Council during the past two years. His time with the Council ends in April. He says with his duties as superintendent of the school district he has plenty on his plate. However, he urges others to become involved and consider serving on a city council, committee, board or a school board if only to see how the process works. Durtschi says he got involved in local politics because he wanted to participate in the community and as one of the largest employers in the city it was important the school district maintain its connection with the city.

SPRING FISH AND WILDLIFE HEARINGS

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress invites all residents to take part in its annual spring hearing process.  Each year residents have an opportunity to submit ideas as resolutions to the WCC. Wisconsinites can submit proposed resolutions via the online process through February 24th. Resolutions must have a concern of statewide impact; be practical, achievable and reasonable; and must be within the mission and vision of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. You may submit no more than two resolutions per year. Those interested in submitting a resolution are encouraged to reach out to the resolution review committee or their WCC County Chair for guidance in drafting a resolution. Additional tips on preparing a resolution are available on the WCC and DNR’s Spring Hearings webpage. The spring hearing will begin April 14th and close on April 16th.
