2 January 2025 Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Packers are gearing up for their final regular season game Sunday against the Bears at Lambeau Field. Green Bay is 11-5 following their loss at Minnesota to the Vikings, 27-25. The Bears come in at 4-12 and have lost 10 straight.

Coach Matt LaFleur on Wednesday announced that it’s unlikely cornerback will play again this season. He suffered a torn PCL against the Jaguars on October 27th but was not place on injured reserve because the team thought it was a short term injury. He had surgery on the knee Tuesday.

The Chicago Bears plan to have Caleb Williams make one more start rather than hold their prized rookie quarterback out of the season finale.

Interim coach Thomas Brown shot down the idea of having Williams sit out Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field, saying it’s not something he and management discussed. He said the team’s other healthy starters will play, too.

Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, has been sacked a franchise-record and NFL-leading 67 times. But the Bears believe the benefits of having him play against the Packers outweigh the potential injury risks.

The pregame starts at 10 with the kickoff at noon on FM 1023, The Bug.

Giannis Antetokounmpo shook off a four-point first half and finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks rallied from a 19-point deficit and beat the Indiana Pacers 120-112 on Tuesday.

Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP who missed the previous three games with a non-COVID illness, stepped up in the second half after the Bucks fell behind 83-64 in the third quarter. The NBA scoring leader made 11 of 20 shots from the field and 8 of 13 from the line while adding five assists.

Brook Lopez scored 16 points and Bobby Portis Jr. had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Bucks, who outscored the Pacers 67-48 after halftime.

Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 25 points. Pascal Siakam had 20.

Bucks: Just when it seemed as if the Bucks were headed to a third consecutive loss, they went on a 12-0 run and trimmed a huge deficit to three points entering the final quarter. The strong second half made up for a sluggish first half.

Gary Trent Jr. hit two clutch 3-pointers late, the first with the Bucks leading by one and the second with a two-point lead just as the shot clock expired to make it 115-110 with 1:39 remaining.

Damian Lillard missed all seven shots, including three 3s, and committed two turnovers in a forgettable first half while being hounded by top Pacers defender Andrew Nembhard. Lillard finished with 3-for-14 shooting for nine points.

The Bucks host Brooklyn on Thursday.

Rumors are swirling online that the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will meet in Ireland for a game sometime next season.

However, Packers officials on Tuesday said the first-of-its-kind international matchup has not yet been confirmed.

Citing team sources, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported over the weekend the Steelers “are expecting to play a regular season game in Ireland in 2025, according to a source, the Steelers’ opponent will be the Packers. It comes after the Irish Examiner reported last month Dublin’s Croke Park would host a game, featuring the Steelers, in September 2025.

Green Bay is paired with the AFC North and NFC East for its schedule next year, meaning a game against the Steelers is certain. In their report about the rumored game in Dublin, Sports Illustrated said Pittsburgh would operate as the home team, while it would be designated as an away matchup for the Packers.

If the rumors are true, this wouldn’t be the first time the Steelers have played in Ireland. Dublin hosted the preseason American Bowl in 1997 between Pittsburgh and the Chicago Bears.

In October, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was quoted as saying, “I know the Steelers really wanna go there. I have no doubt that we’re going to be playing in Ireland. I don’t know if it will be next year, but it’s coming soon.”

The NFL is slated to have up to eight international games during the 2025 season, and it has been widely reported that one would be held in Ireland for the first time in the regular season.

The Milwaukee Brewers telecasts in 2025 is changing, once again.

On Tuesday, the team announced it has reached a new agreement with Diamond Sports Group, owner of FanDuel Sports Network — recently rebranded from Bally Sports — to produce and distribute local broadcasts in 2025.

News broke in October that Major League Basebnall would be handling the production and distribution of Brewers games after Diamond Sports Group’s contract with the Brewers expired at the end of Milwaukee’s regular season.

A news release says the Brewers’ rights agreement with FanDuel Sports Network will replace their previously-announced arrangement with MLB Media.

According to Brewers officials, FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin will offer live games to fans across cable and satellite. There will also be a direct streaming package available through the FanDuel Sports Network app.

Each game telecast on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin will feature 30-minute pregame and 30-minute postgame shows. With the exception of games selected for national partners, FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin will televise all Brewers regular season games, plus a selection of Spring Training contests, the team says.

Anyone who streamed 2024 Brewers games using the Bally Sports app should update to the new FanDuel Sports Network app to watch games for the 2025 season.
