HORICON MAN SENTENCED FOR VEHICULAR HOMICIDE

A 33-year-old Horicon man was recently sentenced in Washington County Court on vehicular homicide charges for the death of three people.  Steven Bruskiewicz Jr was sentenced to three years in prison for the June 22nd, 2022 traffic accident. Thirty-year-old Casey Lynn Schwartz of Mayville was heading south on State Highway 164 at Elmwood Road when her vehicle was rear-ended by Bruskiewicz’s vehicle. The collision pushed her car into the northbound lane where it was hit by a northbound vehicle. She, her unborn child, and her one-year-old son died at the scene. A 67-year-old Waukesha man driving the vehicle whose path she was pushed into was also injured in the crash. Bruskiewicz was sentenced last Tuesday.

SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED IN WAUPUN

Working with Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies, Waupun Police Friday executed a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of Tulip Lane in Waupun. ADVOCAP OPPORTUNITY CENTER

The Executive Director for ADVOCAP in Fond du Lac says when they opened the Opportunity Center at their offices they never imagined there would be such a demand for its services. Tanya Marcoe says it was meant to be a place to provide connections for the homeless and others who don’t have a way to navigate the system. She says for example it can help people get food share, find out how to apply for Social Security, have access to a computer, or for the homeless provide a mailbox. Marcoe says they also want to aid people who need jobs and healthcare. She says unfortunately a lot of the people they are seeing are the elderly who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless due to high housing and other costs. Since the Opportunity Center opened six weeks ago they have served over 100 people. The Opportunity Center is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 3 pm at the ADVOCAP offices at 19 West 1st Street in Fond du Lac.

VACCINATIONS

An emergency physician at SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital recommends getting vaccinated, if you haven’t been, for the current crop of respiratory illnesses making the rounds. Doctors around the country have seen the flu, RSV, and COVID all peaking early and at the same time. Dr. Jason Geiger says only about 31 percent of the population has been vaccinated for the flu. Most of the people they’ve seen in their ER for the flu were not vaccinated. Each year the influenza vaccine tries to protect against the latest strains of the flu. He says the efficacy for this year’s flu shot is about 40 percent, but even if it doesn’t ward off the flu for you it will lessen the chances of suffering serious symptoms. Dr. Geiger says while COVID isn’t as serious as at the peak of the epidemic it will still create respiratory issues and could be more serious for those who are immunocompromised.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DALLMAN ON THE STATE BUDGET AND TAX CUTS

State Representative Alex Dallman was recently re-appointed to the state legislature’s powerful budget writing committee. The state lawmaker from Markesan will be serving on the Joint Committee on Finance which is tasked with creating the biennial state budget. Dallman says that will be their primary focus until the budget is approved this summer. He says at this point they are waiting for the Governor’s budget proposals before they consider them and fashion the budget. He says Republican legislators are also hoping to return some of the state budget surplus to taxpayers this session. He says the Governor vetoed their proposals in the last session which would have eliminated a tax on retirement income for seniors and a middle class income tax cut.  Representative Dallman represents the 39th State Assembly District.

MEETING ON RURAL HOMELESSNESS

The Ripon/Green Lake subcommittee of the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition is hosting a regional meeting to address the pressing issue of rural homelessness in Wisconsin. With 58 percent of Wisconsin’s homeless population living in rural areas, the discussion aims to spotlight this often-overlooked issue. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be accessible via Zoom. Organizers are also collecting information through a short online survey. The event is open to the public.
