1/10/25 Hometown Broadcasting Sports Friday

10 January 2025 Sports

The Packers will seek to avenge an opening-season loss to the Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Eagles, 14-3 are seeded number three in the NFC playoffs while the Packers, 11-6, come in at number seven.

Both teams have quarterback issues.  Jalen Hurts is back practicing after a two-week layoff with a concussion but he was a full participant in practice on Thursday.

Packers quarterback  Jordan Love said his elbow —injured in the regular-season finale — was still sore, and he felt pain when he did some limited throwing in practice. He was listed as a full participant in practice on Thursday.

The expected marquee matchup between Hurts and Love may come down more to which one can survive 60 minutes in one piece — with temperatures expected in the 20s — rather than one healthy enough to fill a game of stupendous plays.

The NFC East champion Eagles (14-3) have played football about as well as any team this season — one that started with a win in Brazil over Green Bay.

Hurts guided the Eagles to 10 straight wins and Saquon Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards rushing. They boast the No. 1 defense in the NFL — a key reason they are 4 1/2-point favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown is their leading receiver. Despite Brown’s skills, the Eagles passing attack has not been a juggernaut. The Eagles’ passing game actually ranks 4th-worst, 29th out of 32 teams overall. That’s despite Brown’s 1,000-yard season, an accomplishment the receiver reached despite sitting out 4 games.

The Packers (11-6) are again a No. 7 seed and again hitting the road for the playoff opener. The similarities largely end there for a Packers team that has lost two straight games. Love was listed as a full participant in Thursday’s practice. Love’s right elbow is an issue and wide receiver Christian Watson suffered a season-ending torn ACL last week. Watson had 29 catches for 620 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Backup Malik Willis suffered a right thumb injury against the Bears but also was a full participant in Thursday’s practice.

The Packers will also try to run the football with Josh Jacobs, who leads the team in rushing.

The pregame starts Sunday at 1:00 with the kickoff at 3:30 and can be heard on FM 1023, The Bug.

The Playoffs get underway Saturday with two games. The Chargers play the Texans on the road at 3:30 with the Steelers at Ravens game to follow.

The first game Sunday features the Broncos at the Bills with the kickoff at 7:00.

On Monday night the Vikings play the Rams in Glendale, Arizona. The game was moved because of the wild fire threats.

The Bucks return to action tonight as they play the Magic in Orlando.

In College Football Semi Final action last night, Notre Dame held on to defeat Penn State 27-24 in the Orange Bowl. A late interception insured the win.

Tonight the Ohio State Buckeyes play the Texans Longhorns in Arlington, Texas. The winner faces Notre Dame for the National Championship.
