From Wayne Mausser:

In the NFC North Sunday the Vikings won at home over the Falcons 42-21 to maintain their hold on second place in the division. Minnesota erupted for three fourth quarter touchdowns to break open a close game.

Quarterback Sam Darnold completed 22 of 28 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns for the Vikings. Wide receiver Jordan Addison caught 8 passes for 133 yards and three scores and Justin Jefferson caught 7 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns while Aaron Jones rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Former Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins was 23 of 37 for 344 yards and two interceptions for Atlanta.

The Vikings upped their record to 11-2 while the Falcons drop to 6-7.

In Sunday Night Football the Chiefs held on at home to edge the Chargers 19-17 as Matthew Wright kicked a late 31-yard field goal that hit the left upright to win it.

Patrick Mahomes completed 24 of 37 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City. The Chargers Justin Herbert 21 of 30 for 213 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs improve to 12-1 while the Chargers drop to 8-5.

In Monday Night Football the Bengals play the Cowboys in Dallas.

Giannis Antetkounmpo had 34 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and the Milwaukee Bucks snapped a two-game skid with a 118-113 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday.

Damien Lillard had 15 points and 11 assists and Bobby Portis added 23 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Bucks won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Dennis Schroder had 34 points and 10 assists, Cam Johnson scored 26 points and Nic Claxton added 21 points and nine rebounds as the Nets lost for the fourth time in five games, falling to 4-13 against Eastern Conference foes.

Damian Lillard’s streak of six straight 25-point games ended while Antetokounmpo had his NBA-best 14th game with at least 30 points.

Brooklyn: Schroder led Brooklyn in scoring for the fourth time this season, surpassing 30 points for the third time. He is averaging 31.5 points in two games against Milwaukee this season and has 493 points in 31 career games against the Bucks.

Milwaukee hosts Orlando in an NBA Cup quarterfinal Tuesday. Brooklyn is at Memphis on Friday.

Kam Jones scored 32 points to lead No. 5 Marquette to an 88-74 victory over No. 11 Wisconsin on Saturday.

Coming off their first loss of the season earlier last week at Iowa State, the Golden Eagles (9-1) also got double-digit efforts from David Joplin, Chase Ross and Stevie Mitchell, who combined for 37 points, while shooting 50% (31 for 62) from the floor.

The Badgers (8-2) dropped their second straight despite 22 points from Max Klesmit and 17 from John Blackwell.

Wisconsin led 39-37 at halftime after both teams went 11 for 25 from the field in the first 20 minutes.

Marquette took control after the break, making its first two 3-pointers and taking a 53-47 lead with 15:41 to play. The lead grew to seven on Ross’ layup with 13:07 left, forcing a Wisconsin timeout.

The Golden Eagles took control from there, pushing the lead to 15 points after Mitchell converted a three-point play to make it 70-55 with 8:49 to play.

Jones made back-to-back buckets with 15:05 to play, turning a 47-all game into a four-point lead that the Golden Eagles would never relinquish.

Wisconsin turned the ball over a whopping 16 times which Marquette converted into 18 points while also being outscored 44-28 in the paint.

Marquette’s victory snapped a three-game losing streak in the series, which dates back to 1917 and marked its largest margin of victory since an 82-63 decision in 2017. Wisconsin still leads the all-time series, 71-60 while the Golden Eagles hold a 42-30 edge in Milwaukee.

Wisconsin is at No. 19 Illinois on Tuesday.  Marquette is at Dayton on Saturday

In their fifth straight loss, Phoenix head coach Doug Gottlieb elected to keep the leading scorer in all of Division 1 men’s basketball, Anthony Roy, on the bench for the entire game.

The Phoenix led 15-11 early in the first half, but the Vikings went on to lead by as many as 29 points before ultimately winning, 83-61.

Gottlieb called the choice to bench Roy a “coach’s decision” and avoided getting into specifics. He mentioned he did not have a conversation with Roy before the game about the decision.

Following a 72-66 loss to Campbell last week, Gottlieb told reporters that if Roy did not play “[his] way”, then he would play “less and less”. Roy was 6/19 from the field and 2/11 from beyond the arc in that game, finishing with 20 points. In their next game, an 84-75 loss at IU Indy on Wednesday, Roy finished 12/20 overall and 6/12 from 3-point range for 34 points.

The Phoenix return to the court at the Resch Center on Wednesday Dec. 11 for a rivalry matchup against UW-Milwaukee.

Willy Adames has agreed to a $182 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco, providing the Giants with a power-hitting shortstop in the prime of his career, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday on condition of anonymity because the agreement was pending a physical. ESPN first reported the move.

It’s a big splash by the Giants’ new-look front office, which is now led by former All-Star catcher Buster Posey, who took over for the fired Farhan Zaidi in September. San Francisco has missed the playoffs in each of the last three years and just completed a disappointing 80-82 season.

The 29-year-old Adames is coming off his best offensive season in the big leagues after hitting .251 with a career-high 32 homers and 112 RBIs with the Milwaukee Brewers. He’s a solid defensive shortstop with a strong arm and good range, though his metrics slipped a little in 2024.

He also has provided consistent power with 150 homers over seven seasons, breaking into the big leagues in 2018 with Tampa Bay and hitting 20 homers in his first full season in 2019.

He was traded to the Brewers in 2021 and had one of his best seasons in 2022, slugging 31 homers with 98 RBIs and had a 4.3 WAR.

Adames was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 2012 as a 16-year-old in the Dominican Republic.

Meanshile, superstar outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets are in agreement on a 15-year, $765 million contract, sources told ESPN on Sunday night, the largest deal in professional sports history.

The deal includes an opt-out after five years and no deferred money, sources said. If Soto chooses not to opt out, his deal will go up $4 million per year — from $51 million to $55 million — for the remainder of the contract, meaning the total value could exceed $800 million.

The contract also includes a $75 million signing bonus, sources said.

During his post-game conference, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur addressed a tense moment on the field before Thursday night’s game, when he and a Detroit Lions fan got into a verbal altercation on the field.

The fan was on the field to hold the flag for the national anthem.

LaFleur described, “He was talking junk to our players, giving them the throat slash sign, and you’re trying to deescalate it and then he gets in my face. So, I thought it was pretty unsportsmanlike. I’ve never seen that.”

LeFleur is now calling for more security in these situations.
