6 December 2024 Sports

Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes, Jake Bates made a 35-yard field goal as time expired and the Detroit Lions clinched a playoff spot with a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

The NFC-best Lions (12-1) broke a franchise record with their 11th straight win – including two over the Packers (9-4) – to stay ahead of Minnesota (10-2) in the highly competitive NFC North.

Detroit coach Dan Campbell went for it on fourth down five times, including with 1 yard to go at the Green Bay 21 with 43 seconds left, and his gambles backfired only once.

David Montgomery ran for 7 yards, barely getting a handoff from Goff after the quarterback tripped and was falling toward the turf. That ensured the Lions could try a field goal without giving the Packers the ball back, and Bates hit his third game-winning kick this season.

The Liors led 17-7 at the half before the Packers scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to take 21-17 lead. Detroit scored later in the quarter and led 24-21 at the end of three quarters. Each team scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Goff completed 32 of 41 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Wide receiver Jameson Williams caught five passes for 80 yards while Tim Patrick caught two touchdown passes and Jahmyr Gibbs caught the other.

The Packers Jordan Love was 12 of 20 for 206 yards and a touchdown pass to tight end Tucker Kraft. Wide receiver Christian Watson caught four passes for 114 yards. On the ground, Josh Jacobs gained 66 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns.

The Lions improve to 12-1 while the Packers drop to 9-4

Green Bay is at NFC West-leading Seattle in a Sunday night game on Dec. 15th.

The Lions host AFC East-leading Buffalo on Dec. 15th.

The Green Bay Packers announced Thursday that defensive lineman Kenny Clark has been named the team’s nominee for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The award is the league’s most prestigious honor and acknowledges NFL players who excel on the field and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to creating a positive impact beyond the game.

This is the second time Clark has been nominated for the award, having been previously nominated in 2018.

“We are proud to nominate Kenny Clark for this prestigious award for the second time,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “A respected leader in the locker room, Kenny makes his presence known off the field, too. His commitment to the community, both in Green Bay and southern California, has only grown as he has excelled in his career. His dedication to giving back to young people is particularly impressive, and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”

Clark’s foundation – The Clark Family Dreams Do Come True Foundation – focuses on empowering youth with resources and mentorship to succeed no matter their upbringing. This summer, the foundation hosted its 8th annual Kenny Clark Dreams Do Come True Football Camp in California, providing hundreds of kids the opportunity to learn and play the game with NFL players and coaches at no cost.

Clark has assembled food packages for Wisconsin families, provided 250 families in Riverside, Calif., with a full Thanksgiving dinner, and donated celebrity dinners to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay. He has also hosted coat and toy drives so kids can stay warm and experience the joy of the holidays.

Clark has also been involved in a wide variety of Packers community outreach efforts during his time with the team, signing autographs to raise money for the Salvation Army, visiting kids at Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and taking part in several events with the Brown County Pals Program, a mentorship program that pairs children involved with Brown County Child Protective Services with positive role models.

As a nominee, Clark will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the end of the season in recognition of his accomplishments on and off the field.

All 32 nominees will be recognized for their achievements during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. The winner of the 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will be announced during NFL Honors.
