THURSDAY NEWS

The former Ripon Fire Chief was sentenced of fraudulent use of the district’s credit card.

On Monday, District Attorney Eric J. Toney announced that Timothy Saul Jr. pleaded guilty to three counts of Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card and was sentenced by Judge Andrew Christenson to a $1,000 fine on each count, totaling $3,000 plus court costs.

The investigation revealed that from 2016 through 2022, the Defendant’s fraudulent use of the Ripon Area Fire District’s credit card for personal use resulted in a balance of over $30,000.

The investigation reflected that the defendant paid off the balance and did not show any public funds or money from the Fire District were used to pay off the credit card.

The defendant failed to provide proper financial management and communication to the board, which allowed the defendant to benefit from a significant line of credit, protecting his credit while accruing a high balance with late fees.

“The Ripon community should be proud of the work of the Fire District to expose the defendant’s criminal activity and hold him accountable, based on the great investigation by the Ripon Police Department. The Ripon area community should once again be proud of their Fire District and those serving them on the Board,” District Attorney Toney said.

TWO FORMER STATE SENATORS PASSED AWAY

Governor Tony Evers released two separate statements Tuesday on the passing of two former Wisconsin state senators.

Former State Senator George Petak died Tuesday at 75 after a long illness, according to his son on Facebook.

A Republican, Petak is best known for casting the deciding vote that allowed public funding for American Family Field, then known as Miller Park. That vote eventually led to him becoming the first Wisconsin state legislator to be removed from office in a recall election.

Petak previously voted against funding the ballpark twice, but upon changing his vote said he was worried about the Brewers leaving Milwaukee.

He represented the 21st Senate District, which covers parts of Racine and Milwaukee counties, from 1991 through June of 1996.

In a statement, Governor Evers said in part “Senator Petak was a man of faith, courage, and principle. He truly had a servant’s heart, always leading with empathy and integrity to give back and do more for others.”

Former Senate Majority Leader Tim Cullen died on Monday. He was 80 years old.

A Democrat, Cullen represented the 15th Senate District in the Janesville area from 1975-1987 and was majority leader from 1982 to 1987. He was re-elected to the state senate in 2010.

n a statement on Cullen’s death, Governor Evers says in part “Senator Cullen always fought for working families, gave back to and supported kids in the Janesville area, and advocated fiercely for nonpartisan redistricting and access to the ballot box during both his time in the Wisconsin State Senate and beyond it.”

Evers noted how Cullen consistently fought against gerrymandering.

MEGA MILLIONS JACKPOT REACHED AN ESTIMATED $1.15 BILLION

The Mega Millions jackpot reached an estimated $1.15 billion after no one matched all six numbers drawn on Christmas Eve. The cash value is estimated to be $516.1 million.

The numbers drawn Tuesday were 11, 14, 38, 45, 46 and 3.

Though no one won the jackpot, four tickets matched five of the numbers to win $1 million. Those tickets were sold in California, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

Another drawing will be held Friday for the $1.15 billion jackpot, which would be the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history. It would also be the largest jackpot won in the month of December, according to Mega Millions.

Mega Millions says the jackpot has been growing since a $810 million jackpot was won on Sept. 10.

The next drawing will take place at 11 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets are sold for $2 in 45 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A FATAL CRASH IN MARINETTE COUNTY HAPPENED TUESDAY NIGHT.

Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller reports that at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, Marinette County Dispatch received an iPhone crash detection call.

Shortly after, it reported there was a one-vehicle crash on County Highway X near Silver Creek Road in the Town of Stephenson.

The investigation indicates the vehicle was operated by Chase M. Cutty, of Crivitz, Wisconsin.

Cutty was traveling west of County Highway X when he began to pass another vehicle in the no passing zone. He lost control while passing, went into the ditch, and struck several trees.

Reports say he was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the crash. He sustained fatal injuries.

Speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.
