The Packers return to the practice field Wednesday as they start to prepare for Sunday’s game in Seattle against the Seahawks. Green Bay is 9-4 after losing at Detroit last Thursday night while Seattle leads the NFC West with an 8-5 record, a game ahead of the 7-6 Rams.
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 37 points, Damian Lillard had nine of his 28 in the final minute and the Milwaukee Bucks returned to the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas by beating the Orlando Magic 114-109 on Tuesday night.
Milwaukee reached the semifinals of the in-season tournament in Las Vegas last December and will be the only returning team in Year 2. They will play Saturday against the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal between the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks.
Jalen Suggs led a short-handed Orlando team with 32 points but missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Lillard was fouled and sank two free throws with 9.1 seconds remaining and Suggs missed a potential tying 3.
Antetokounmpo then made both free throws with 5 seconds left and the Bucks held on.
Antetokounmpo extended his streak to 22 straight games with 20 or more points on 50% shooting, the longest streak to open a season in league history and the third-longest at any point in a season (Shaquille O’Neal and Zion Williamson, both 25 games). Antetokounmpo was 15 of 24 from the field.
The Magic were missing forwards Paolo Banchero (torn right oblique), Jonathan Isaac (right hamstring strain) and Franz Wagner, who suffered a torn right oblique on Friday against Philadelphia; along with guard Gary Harris (left hamstring strain).
The Wisconsin Herd returns home to take on the Motor City Cruise on Wednesday, with the tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
Kasparas Jakucionis scored a career-high 24 points, Tre White had 23 points and eight rebounds and Kylan Boswell added 19 points and six assists to lead Illinois to an 86-80 win over No. 20 Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
It was the fourth straight game in which Jakucionis scored 20 or more points for the Illini (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten), who beat Wisconsin for the ninth consecutive time.
Nolan Winter led the Badgers (8-3, 0-2) with 15 points and seven rebounds, John Tonje had 14 points, Max Klesmit scored 13 and John Blackwell had 10. Wisconsin lost its third straight game after opening the season with eight consecutive victories.
Illinois led 39-35 at halftime. The Illini fell behind 47-46 with 16:32 left in the second half before regaining the lead on a 3-pointer by Boswell. They never trailed again.
It was the 150th win in Brad Underwood’s eighth year as the Illinois coach. He’s now 150-90.
Illinois will host No. 1 Tennessee on Saturday. Butler is at Wisconsin on Saturday.
The Wisconsin Badgers have officially hired former Kansas offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes to the same position.
Reports of Grimes hiring started circulating late last week, but the school did not officially announcing Grimes’ hiring until Tuesday.
Grimes’ offense averaged 212 yards on the ground in 2024. That was good enough for 12th in the FBS last season.
Grimes also worked previously for one-time Badgers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda at Baylor. Helping the Bears win the Big 12 title in 2021.
He also has experience working with quarterbacks and a high power passing attack. At BYU, Zach Wilson throwing for 3,692 yards and 33 TDs with just three interceptions in 2020 under Grimes.
Grimes also made stops as an offensive line coach at Auburn and LSU.
Grimes takes over for Phil Longo, who was let go by Fickell on November 17th. The Badgers were ranked 90th in total offense at just 363 yards per game in their two seasons with Longo as the play caller.
Caitlin Clark added another accolade to her resume in what has become a momentous year. On Tuesday Time named the Indiana Fever point guard their 2924 Athlete of the Year, honoring the 22-year old for her accomplishments on and off the court.
The announcement comes a few months after Clark was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year, garnering almost unanimous support from the panel of sportscasters and broadcasters casting votes. Her first season in the league saw a handful of other impressive accomplishments, too. She was named to the WNBA All-Star, All WNBA First Team and WNBA All-Rookie Team. She was also the league assist leader on the season.
Clark is understandably, proud of the impact she has had in the women’s sporting world. “I’ve been able to captivate so many people that have never watched women’s sports, let alone women’s basketball, and turn them into fans,” she told TIME.
The 2025 Brewers won’t have the popular and productive Willy Adames at shortstop, and they might not have Devin Williams if the All-Star closer is traded heading into a contract year. But before Milwaukee fans get down reading the news from the MLB Winter Meetings, where Adames’ $182 million deal with the Giants was nearing completion and Juan Soto’s record-setting, $765 million agreement with the Mets sent a jolt through the industry, there was a glimmer of good news:
Christian Yelich is full speed ahead in his comeback from back surgery.
“He’s on track,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said on Monday. “Not doing baseball [activities] yet, but he’s on track.”
Yelich, the 2018 NL MVP Award winner and ’19 runner-up, was in the midst of a renaissance last season, with a spot in the All-Star Game starting lineup to go with a .910 OPS, when he was sidelined by a painful back injury that required surgery in August. Yelich and the Brewers hope the procedure — a microdiscectomy — can relieve the symptoms that have bothered him for years.
Yelich has yet to swing a bat, and that will offer a significant test for a wiry hitter whose extreme torque is at the heart of his success, but Yelich is well underway with what GM Matt Arnold referred to as functional baseball movements.
“I think that was a big part of why he had the back surgery sooner rather than later,” Arnold said. “Obviously, we missed him a ton last year on the field. But him having that surgery sooner allows him to have more of a traditional, full offseason.
“He feels great right now. We have a lot of people who are regularly in touch with him, and he is in a really good spot right now. … He showed me pictures of what they cleaned up from his surgery, and that was a big deal. He was in a lot of pain, and he’s feeling great at the moment.”
The Brewers haven’t heard of any setbacks for right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who underwent major shoulder surgery in October 2023 and spent all of ‘24 rehabbing.
The Brewers will continue a cautious approach with Woodruff, 31, whose 3.10 ERA is best in franchise history for a pitcher who has made at least 50 Milwaukee starts. That means he might not be in the rotation on Opening Day, making depth a priority once again. With that in mind, left-handers Aaron Ashby and DL Hall, who appeared last season as both starters and relievers, will be instructed to build up for Spring Training expecting to start.
