RYAN BORGWARDT IN CUSTODY
Efforts to get a 45-year-old Watertown man who faked his own death on Green Lake to return to the country from Eastern Europe have been successful. Ryan Borgwardt faked his death by capsizing a kayak on the lake in August. According to a state website that updates County Jail inmate custody status Borgwardt is in the custody of the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office. During an update last month the Sheriff’s Office revealed how Borgwardt faked his death and had ultimately flown to Eastern Europe to be with a woman from Uzbekistan he had met online. After establishing a rapport with Green Lake County’s Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk, Borgwardt had said he was concerned about how the community would react if he returned. During that November press conference Sheriff Mark Podoll said they had estimated the costs of a 56 day search of the lake for Borgwardt at up to $40,000 plus $7,000 in equipment expenses. The Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a 10 am press conference to provide an update on how Borgwardt came to be in custody. They plan to live stream it on their Facebook page.

TAYLOR SCHABUSINESS CHARGED IN FDL COUNTY COURT
The 26-year-old Green Bay woman sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder and dismemberment of a Green Bay man is facing a new felony charge for attacking a guard at Taycheedah Correctional Institution. Taylor Schabusiness made an initial appearance in Fond du Lac County Court Tuesday on a battery by prisoners charge stemming from an incident at the women’s prison on July 24th. According to the criminal complaint Schabusiness lunged at a nurse who was trying to remove a staple from Schabusiness’s arm in a medical room at the prison. The guard, a sergeant at TCI, intervened and was allegedly hit with a small metal table the nurse was using. Pepper spray was used to subdue Schabusiness. Later the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. She told the investigating Fond du Lac Police Officer she had been hit in the head, suffered bruised ribs, and a sore arm in the attack. The nurse was able to make it safely out of the room during the struggle which was caught on the victim’s body camera. Schabusiness had attacked an attorney representing her in Brown County Court while she was being prosecuted for the Green Bay man’s murder.
RIPON COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES WHEEL TAX
By a 5 to 3 vote the Ripon Common Council last night approved an ordinance that will create a wheel tax. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Council that it will not be implemented until April of 2025. It will assess $25 to each motor vehicle registration in the City. Sonntag says there are 7,750 registered vehicles in the city and the wheel tax would generate about $193,000 a year. The money will go into a designated fund for street repairs. Five people spoke against the tax during a public hearing prior to the Council’s vote. Council members discussed the proposed fee at length. Alderman Doug Iverson said the city can wait for the state to share more revenue with cities, but it is not going to happen. Alderman John Splitt said he didn’t think this was the right time to tell citizens they needed more money. Alderwoman Jolene Schatzinger said she didn’t see a better way to improve the city’s streets. Over the next seven years the city plans to spend $13 million on infrastructure. Sonntag says that will come through grants, borrowing, and other financial means.

AVOIDING THE CHRISTMAS BLUES
Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says putting too much pressure on yourself to have the perfect holiday can cause the Christmas Blues. She says it is especially hard for someone who has lost a loved one. Stress mounts due to finances, relationships, and trying to enjoy yourself and others when you aren’t feeling up to it. Mueller says manage your expectations during the holidays. She recommends setting a budget for purchases and making those purchases ahead of time whether it is for gifts or food preparation, so you don’t have the added pressure of a deadline. Most importantly she suggests seeing to your own self-care. Get enough sleep and eat healthy meals. She says eating sugary snacks before bed can rob you of some of that important rest you need.
GIFT CARD SCAMS
The Administrator for the state’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says gift cards can be a wonderful choice for those who are hard to shop for during the holiday season, but it is also an opportunity for scammers. Michelle Reinen recommends checking gift cards for tampering because thieves will do their research even going to brick and mortar stores to get barcodes for gift cards on display in kiosks. She says they’ve gotten so clever they will put their own stickers with a barcode over the legitimate one so that when you activate it they benefit from it not you. Other tips include avoiding buying discounted gift cards or gift cards in “bulk” online. If you’re picking up gift cards at stores make sure they are fully enclosed in packaging and can’t be swiped or scanned before being opened. She also says to keep any terms and conditions and other information that comes with the card so you can refer back to them as needed. Finally treat your gift cards like cash, activate it only when you need to, and use it as soon as possible.
