The Oshkosh Police Department late Thursday night investigated a disturbance with a weapon at a residence in the 700 block of Nicolet Avenue. Officers learned two people had gotten into a struggle and a woman stabbed a man. When they arrived, the man was no longer there. An acquaintance had taken the 29-year-old Oshkosh man to a local hospital. During the disturbance the man entered the woman’s residence without her permission, physically assaulted her and prevented her from leaving. The two know each other. The man was taken into custody for disorderly conduct, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and battery.

The Chief Deputy of the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office Matt Vande Kolk says they are optimistic the Watertown man who faked his own death will return home for Christmas.

He has been in contact via email with Ryan Borgwardt since November 11th. Vande Kolk says Borgwardt has responsibilities in Wisconsin in addition to his family. He stresses they are keeping an emphasis on his return in their communications with him. Vande Kolk says sometimes you got to swing for the fences. In the video Borgwardt sent to the Sheriff’s Office he uses a cellphone to show his apartment, but it is bare of any personal touches you usually see in a residence that might give away his location. Vande Kolk feels that was done on purpose. The Sheriff’s Office believes Borgwardt has been in Europe since capsizing a kayak on Green Lake in August to fake his death.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Sam Kaufman announced Friday he is running for a second term next April.

Kaufman was appointed to the office following the death of County Executive Allen Buechel and was subsequently elected to the position during a special election. He has served as County Executive the past 2 ½ years. Kaufman says he took his time mulling over whether to run for another term. He says they faced some challenges during his first term including the decision by the UW-Oshkosh to leave the Fond du Lac campus, but they have a solid group of county employees. He says there are more challenges ahead, but he’s ready to take them on. Kaufman says the possibility of a new county jail and single-family housing are among those challenges.

The family of four Waupaca County siblings killed by a wrong-way drunk driver nearly a year ago got a small piece of closure on Friday as the man responsible was sentenced to more than 37 years behind bars.

48-year-old Scott Farmer of Neenah pleaded no contest back in August and was then found guilty of 5th offense drunk driving and four charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. The Wisconsin State Crime Lab said his blood-alcohol content was 0.346, more than four times the normal legal limit, but because of Farmer’s prior OWIs, he was restricted to a blood-alcohol content of 0.02. Farmer received nine years for each sibling who died in the crash, totaling 36 years in prison. He was also sentenced to 18 months for the OWI charge.
In a standing-room-only Waupaca County courtroom, Scott Farmer went before a judge as the family of the four siblings he killed in a drunk driving crash, as he drove the wrong way on Highway 10 last December spoke out, asking for the maximum sentence.
“His irresponsibility and lack of consideration for other people’s lives, destroying four innocent beings and my life,” said Paulina Gonzalez through an interpreter. Paulina is the mother of 26-year-old Daniel, 23-year-old Fabian, 14-year-old Lillian, and 9-year-old Daniela. Three of the four died at the scene near Weyauwega, and Daniel was left on life support before donating all of his organs. The one remaining sibling, Jorge, testified from Ecuador, which is where most of the family is from.

A woman convicted of murdering and dismembering a man has filed an appeal.

However, her attorney states in court documents that they plan to file a “no-merit” report. Online court records show Taylor Schabusiness filed an appeal on Thursday. In court documents, the undersigned attorney writes they intend to file a “no-merit“ report by March 24, 2025. A ”no-merit” report means the attorney will review details of the case that could support an appeal and address why the details have no merit to support appealing a conviction.
Schabusiness was sentenced in September 2023 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the February 2022 killing of Shad Thyrion. In July 2023, a jury convicted her of first-degree intentional homicide, third-degree sexual assault, and mutilating a corpse.
Schabusiness had pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, but the jury also found that she wasn’t mentally ill when she killed Thyrion. Prosecutors said Thyrion and Schabusiness had smoked methamphetamine in the basement of Thyrion’s mother’s Green Bay home before Schabusiness strangled, decapitated, and dismembered him. She then left parts of his body throughout the house and in a vehicle, authorities said. Schabusiness was arrested on Feb. 23, 2022, after Thyrion’s mother called police to her house after she discovered her son’s head in a bucket in the basement. In February, Schabusiness attacked her previous attorney during a hearing before a deputy wrestled her to the courtroom floor.
