Milwaukee’s Pat Murphy won National League Manager of the Year on Tuesday after a stellar debut season with the Brewers, while Cleveland’s Stephen Vogt took the AL honors honor after leading the Guardians to 92 wins and a division title in his first year as a skipper at any level.
Murphy, 65, led the Brewers to an NL Central title, a 93-69 record and is the franchise’s first manager to earn the award since it was introduced in 1983. In the playoffs, Milwaukee lost to the New York Mets in a three-games Wild-Card Series.
Murphy had an unusual career path to big league success — he was a longtime college coach at Notre Dame and Arizona State before moving to the professional ranks in 2010. He worked in the Padres’ minor league system until 2015 when he was hired to be Milwaukee’s bench coach under Craig Counsell, who played for Murphy at Notre Dame.
After Counsell left for the Cubs during the offseason, the Brewers quickly turned to Murphy. The transition was nearly seamless.
Murphy beat San Diego’s Mike Shildt and New York’s Carlos Mendoza,. He received 27 of the 30 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Shildt, Mendoza and Philadelphia’s Rob Thomson each received one vote.
The 40-year-old Vogt beat Kansas City’s Matt Quatraro and Detroit’s A.J. Hinch, both AL Central rivals. He’s the first AL manager to win the award in his debut season since Minnesota’s Rocco Baldelli did it in 2019. He’s also the first to go from player to Manager of the Year in just two years.
The previous fastest was Joe Girardi from 2003 to 2006, when he won NL Manager of the Year with the Florida Marlins.
Vogt received 27 of the 30 first-place votes. Quatraro got two and Hinch one.
Vogt led the Guardians to a 92-69 record and the playoffs in his frist season after replacing three-time manager of the year Terry Francona. The former big league catcher took Cleveland to the AL Championship Series before losing to the Yankees in five games.
Vogt is the third Cleveland skipper to win the honor, joining Francona (2013, 2016, 2022) and Eric Wedge (2007).
Kam Jones had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists as No. 15 Marquette defeated No. 6 Purdue 76-58 on Tuesday night to snap the Boilermakers’ 39-game regular-season nonconference winning streak.
Purdue (4-1) hadn’t lost a regular-season nonconference game since falling 58-54 at Miami on Dec. 8, 2020, compiling the fourth-longest such streak in NCAA history. The record is held by Syracuse, which won 52 straight nonconference regular-season games from Dec. 17, 2008, through Dec. 17, 2012.
Jones’ triple-double was the third in school history and first since Dwyane Wade had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists when Marquette beat Kentucky 83-69 in a 2003 regional final to earn its most recent Final Four appearance.
Marquette’s only other triple-double came from Tony Miller against Wisconsin on Dec. 31, 1994.
Stevie Mitchell scored a career-high 21 points for Marquette (5-0). Chase Ross had 12 and Ben Gold added 11.
Trey Kaufman-Renn had 16 points, Fletcher Loyer 13 and Braden Smith 11 for Purdue.
Purdue: The string of nonconference regular-season wins wasn’t the only Purdue streak to get snapped. The Boilermakers also had won an NCAA-best 25 straight November games.
Marquette: Jones has been a productive scorer much of his career, but Tuesday’s game showed how much he has developed as an all-around player. His 13 rebounds and 10 assists were both career highs.
Purdue trailed 55-49 with eight minutes left before David Joplin scored four points during an 8-0 run for Marquette that made it a 14-point game with 4:51 remaining. The spurt culminated with Ross getting a steal and passing to Mitchell for a layup.
After committing just three turnovers Friday in an 87-78 victory over then-No. 2 Alabama, Purdue had 15 on Tuesday.
Both teams next play Saturday, with Purdue hosting Marshall while Marquette faces Georgia at Paradise Island, Bahamas.
The Packers return to the practice field today getting ready for the 49ers Sunday at Lambeau Field. Green Bay is 7-7 and in third place in the NFC North behind Minnesota and first place Detroit. San Francisco is 5-5 and is tied with the Seahawks and Rams behind the first place Cardinals in the NFC West.
The Milwaukee Bucks are back in action tonight hosting the Chicago Bulls. The Bucks are 5-9 in the Eastern Conference while the Bulls are 6-9. Milwaukee is coming off a 101-100 victory over the Rockets Monday night, as Damian returned from concussion protocol and hit a game-winning layup with 3.9 seconds left to win it, snapping Houston’s five-game winning streak. Tonight’s tipoff is at 6:30 from Firserv Forum.
The New York Jets won’t wait until after the season for a complete reboot. Gang Green fired general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday.
Forty-two days after owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh after a week 5 loss to the Vikings in London, Douglas joints him on the unemployment line.
Douglas was in the final year of his contract and, given the 3-8 clubs performance, he wasn’t expected to return to New York in 2025. The Jets decided a parting of the ways was not worth waiting.
The Jets hired Douglas away from Philadelphia, where he was vice president of player personnel in 2019. In five-plus season under his guidance, New York posted a 30-64 record and never sniffed the playoffs. His season high for wins was seven, and a .438 win percentage in Year 1 would be the peak of his tenure.
Credit Douglas for helping build a once-dominant defense, including drafting Quinnen Williams with his first selection in New York. His famed 2022 class included Rookies of the Year in 2022 in cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, to pair with Breece Hall and Jermaine Johnson.
However Douglas’ doom was never solving the QB riddle. Zach Wilson, drafted No. 2 overall in 2021, crashed and burned and there was never a suitable backup option. And the ballyhooed move to bring in Aaron Rodgers has gone up in epic flames.
The Ripon girls’ basketball team opened their season last night, losing at North Fond du Lac to the Orioles, 58-26. The Orioles led 21-15 at the half and then pulled away in the second half for win. The Tigers’ Anna Bucholz scored 9 points and Reese Brooks had 8. North Fond du Lac’s Lily Roberts scored 17 to lead three players in double figures.
Ripon has its first home game Thursday night against Mayville. Tipoff is at 7:15 on the WAVE.
