From Wayne Mausser

Damian Lillard has dealt with all kinds of injuries through his 13 seasons in the NBA, but he’d never had to worry about recovering from a concussion before.

His return from concussion protocolput the Milwaukee Bucks guard in a much more familiar situation.

Lillard came back after missing three games and made a game-winning layup with 3.9 seconds left in the Bucks’ 101-100 victory over Houston that snapped the Rockets’ five-game winning streak Monday.

Lillard had an up-and-down performance in his return. He compiled 18 points and 10 assists, but missed all six of his 3-point attempts and couldn’t convert some contested layups he normally hits.

But when the game was on the line, Lillard delivered, as he has done throughout his career.

The Bucks trailed 100-99 when Lillard had the ball in his hands in the closing seconds. He drove into the lane, split two defenders and made the driving layup that put Milwaukee ahead for good.

The Packers are off today still savoring their 20-19 win over the Bears Sunday at Soldier Field, as Carl Brooks blocked a field goal that would have won the game for Chicago as time expired.

Although Green Bay is on pace for its highest-scoring season since 2021, struggles in the red zone have prevented the Packers from producing up to their capabilities.

A late rally in Sunday’s 20-19 victory at Chicago could represent a turning point.

Green Bay pulled ahead for good with 2:59 remaining when Jordan Love scored from 1 yard out against a Bears defense that has allowed touchdowns on a league-low 40.6% of opponents’ red-zone possessions. Before that score, delivering inside the 20-yard line had remained as elusive as it’s been all season for the Packers.

The Packers have scored touchdowns on 19 of their 39 red-zone possessions to rank 27th in the NFL. They haven’t finished a season with touchdowns on fewer than half of their red-zone drives since 2006.

The Packers were far from that Sunday as they reached Chicago’s 5-yard line without scoring on two drives.

They had second-and-1 at the 5 late in the second quarter until a penalty and a 5-yard loss by Jayden Reed pushed them back to third-and-11 at the 15. That drive ended when Love overthrew Tucker Kraft and was intercepted by Terell Smith.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Packers trailed 19-14 when Love was sacked on third-and-goal at the 5. After coach Matt LaFleur decided against a short field goal attempt, Love found nobody open on fourth down and scrambled until he got tackled at the 1.

The Packers ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns Sunday and have the NFL’s fourth-ranked rushing offense. Love had 261 yards passing on just 17 attempts.

WR Christian Watson had four catches for a career-high 150 yards, including a 60-yarder that set up the go-ahead touchdown against Chicago. This was the 2022 second-round pick’s first game with at least 100 yards receiving since his rookie season. RB Josh Jacobs had 76 yards rushing with a touchdown and 58 yards receiving and DL Brenton Cox Jr. played his first game of the season and recorded a sack. He had been inactive for the Packers’ first nine games.

In Monday Night Football the woes for the Cowboys continued as Houston won at Dallas 34-10.  It was 17-10 at the half and 20-10 at the end of three quarters before the Texans scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

Houston’s Joe Mixon rushed for 109 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns while quarterback C.J. Sroud completed 23 of 34 passes for 257 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.  Defensive end Derek Barnett also scored on a 28-yards fumble recovery.

The Cowboy’s Cooper Rush threw 55 times and completed 32 for 354 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Texans improved to 7-4 while the Cowboys dropped to 3-7.

The Green Bay Packers’ outgoing president and CEO is about to have a permanent presence at Lambeau Field in the Hall of Fame.

The Packers organization announced Monday that Mark Murphy will be inducted at the 54th Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on August 28, 2025. Ticket information for the banquet will be announced in the near future.

He’ll be the 171st individual inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame.

This is Murphy’s 17th and final season as head of the Packers organization.

During his tenure, the team made a total 12 playoff trips, including 8 straight — a record for the club — with five NFC title games and a Super Bowl victory.

Murphy also spearheaded the Titletown development, which officially opened in 2017, with the 4-star Lodge Kohler hotel, Microsoft’s TitletownTech, offices, condominiums, year-round entertainment, a football-themed playground and playing field, and food and beverages.

The Packers have also invested more than $600 million in Lambeau Field, without public tax money, renovating player and coach facilities and improving the fan experience.

Murphy is believed to be the first person to have Super Bowl wins as a player, with Washington in 1982, and a CEO, with Green Bay in 2010. Before coming to Green Bay, Murphy played 8 years for Washington, was an assistant executive director for the NFL Players Association, worked as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, and spent 16 years as director of athletics at Colgate and Northwestern universities.

Murphy officially retires in July, a month before his induction, when he turns 70.

The Wisconsin Badgers have fired offensive coordinator Phil Longo, Wisconsin football head coach Luke Fickell announced Sunday evening.

Longo was with the Badgers for 23 games. The move comes after a close loss to the No. 1 Oregon Ducks less than 24 hours ago.

Fickell said the program is not where it needs to be.

“This morning, I informed Phil Longo that he will no longer serve as our offensive coordinator,” said Fickell. “We are not where we need to be and believe this decision is in the best interest of the team. I appreciate Phil’s commitment to helping us build our program over the past two seasons and wish him well moving forward.”

Before his time with the Badgers, Longo lead the North Carolina Tar Heel offence for four seasons. He spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator for Ole Miss before coming to Chapel Hill.

Next for the Badgers, 5-5, is the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT.

Kansas strengthened its grip on the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll on

Monday, while the rest of the top 10 turned into a jumble of teams swapping places.

The Jayhawks picked up five first-place votes, receiving 49 from a 61-person media panel. No. 2 Uconn had seven first-place votes, No. 3 Gonzaga earned two and No. 4 Auburn had three. Iowa State climbed two spots to round out the top five.

The shuffling started with No. 8 Alabama’s 87-78 loss to No. 6 Purdue, a game that dropped the Crimson Tide six spots and bumped the Boilermakers up seven. Losses by Duke and Arozpma shook up the top 10 further.

The No. 12 Blue Devils dropped six spots from last week after their 77-72 loss to No. 9 Kentucky. The Wildcats climbed 10 spots for their first top-10 ranking this season. Arizona lost 103-88 at No. 19 Wisconsin and fell eight spots to No. 17. The Badgers are ranked for the first time this season.

Kansas backed up its win over North Carolina in the season’s opening week by beating Michigan State and Oakland last week.

UConn continued to roll in its bid for a third straight national championship, blowing out Le Moyne 90-49. Gonzaga crushed UMass Lowell. Auburn rolled over Kent State and Iowa State beat Kansas City by 26.

No. 7 Houston moved up a spot bouncing back from a 74-69 loss to Auburn by blowing out Louisiana.

No. 25 Illinois joined Wisconsin as the only teams to move into the top 25. The Illini knocked off Oakland 66-54 last week.

Ole Miss dropped out from No. 25 despite beating South Alabama and Colorado State last week. Ohio State fell from No. 21 after its 78-64 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M.

The girls’ basketball season kicks off tonight.
