EDEN MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING 22 MILE CHASE

No one was injured when Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies and North Fond du Lac Police pursued a 41-year-old Eden man Monday morning wanted on a felony warrant. Officers tried to pull him over in the Village of North Fond du Lac, but the man who has a violent criminal history drove through front yards before getting back on the road. He continued into Van Dyne and went into Winnebago County. A deputy was able to channel him onto US Highway 45 and the chase came back to Fond du Lac County. Twice tire deflation devices were successfully deployed but it took a maneuver by a Sheriff’s deputy to bring the man’s vehicle to a stop. The chase covered 22 miles, no one was injured during it, but a patrol car sustained minor damage during the maneuver that was used to halt the pursuit. The man was taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail. He is being charged with fleeing or eluding law enforcement, second degree recklessly endangering safety, methamphetamine possession, and felony bail jumping. He was out on a signature bond for multiple drug charges in Fond du Lac County and is on active parole.

JESSE VANG ARRAIGNED

The 40-year-old Two Rivers man facing charges stemming from the death of 3-year-old Elijah Vue, was arraigned in Manitowoc County Court Monday. Jesse Vang, the boyfriend of the boy’s mother Katrina Bauer, pled not guilty to charges of repeated acts of physical abuse of a child causing death, hiding a corpse, resisting or obstructing an officer, and a new felony charge of chronic neglect of a child. He will be back in court on March 13th.  Vang and Baur are both charged in the toddler’s death. In September Elijah’s body was discovered by a person checking their property ahead of hunting season. The location is just a few miles from Vang’s apartment in Two Rivers. Vang reported Elijah missing on February 20th. Baur had entrusted Vang with Elijah’s care for disciplinary reasons. Prosecutors say the toddler was threatened with extreme punishment before his death. The medical examiner’s office says Elijah’s cause of death is “homicide by unspecified means.”

HOVDE CONCEDES RACE TO BALDWIN

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde conceded his race against Democratic incumbent Tammy Baldwin Monday. Hovde posted a video on X, formerly Twitter, saying it was time to move on. Hovde lost to Senator Baldwin by 29,116 votes, which was less than 1 percent of the more than 3.3 million votes cast in the Senate race. He would have been eligible for a recount following the canvass of the vote, if he would pay for it. In his video Hovde thanked his supporters and said a recount would serve no purpose “because you would be recounting the same ballots regardless of their integrity.” Republicans did gain control of the U.S. Senate in the November 5th election.

HIGHWAY 45 PROJECT IN FDL COUNTY COMPLETED

The state’s Department of Transportation tells us a $3.5 million road improvement project in Fond du Lac County has been completed. During the project 7.4 miles of U.S. Highway 45 was improved from Scott Street in the Village of North Fond du Lac to the North County Line in the Town of Friendship. The project started on August 26th.  It included milling existing pavement and overlaying asphaltic pavement. Beam guard was also replaced. Drainage improvements included construction of three new cross culverts under U.S. Highway 45. Northeast Asphalt from Greenville was the prime contractor.

PIG BUTCHERING SCAM

The administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says scammers involved in “pig butchering” take the long term approach to scamming their victims. Michelle Reinen says according to the FTC “pig butchering” accounted for 4 percent of all fraud reports last year, 30 percent of the losses, and had an average loss of $7,000. Scammers take a personal approach and pretend to be a new friend or romantic interest. Others act as financial or investment “coaches” and advise their targets on where and how to maximize their own returns by stringing their target along for as long as possible. Reinen says the romance angle works because the scammer is never met and suggests both make an investment. Red flags also include “love bombing” or showing excessive affection on a dating app and a crypto currency investment pitch. She also warns to beware of investment apps or sites that ask for minimal investments, but promise a high return. The scammer may also pretend to be texting the wrong number and try and establish a relationship with you. Reinen says if you’re suspicious end contact and report the fraud.

CWD CONCERNS

A conservation warden with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds gun deer hunters there are ways of safely disposing their deer carcasses or having their deer tested for CWD. William Hankee says Chronic Wasting Disease is a concern that hunters should at least be considering as they head into the woods this weekend for the start of the 9-day gun deer season. He notes deer have tested positive for CWD in both Fond du Lac and Green Lake counties. He says on the DNR website you can look up where they have dumpsters for carcass disposal or landfills that accept carcasses. As for the CWD testing they have some self-service kiosks or you can learn about where to get the testing done on the website. Only the head of the deer is needed for testing. The nine-day gun deer season starts on Saturday and runs through Sunday, December 1st.  Remember also to register your deer by 5 pm the day after harvest.

The route starts near City Hall. There is a $25 fee that gets you swag including a hoodie. She says the first 20 people to beat the Grinch in the race will receive a gift card. Those participating need to register for Run Santa Run by next Monday. The Rec Department is also sponsoring the 2nd Annual Deck the City outdoor lighting contest. You can register online through December 6th. Ashton says they will also have Letter Writing to Santa. She says this year they are having kids drop off their letters at the library. That program starts on November 29th with a deadline of December 16th.
